Indoor Wet Diatomaceous Earth Application – Useful Benefits?

on

The fine powdery composition of diatomaceous earth, or DE, makes it a great insect killer, but can irritate sufferers of asthma or respiratory disorders while it’s being distributed.

Distributing diatomaceous earth outside doesn’t usually have this effect, but if you’re treating the inside of your home with DE you may notice the still air causes it to build up and irritate your sinuses.

Using a wet application method to distribute diatomaceous earth within your home can be a great way of mitigating this issue. Suspending DE within a water solution makes it easy to spray on without irritation the respiratory system, and once it dries it’s just as effective.

There are a few limitations to this application method- it can’t reach into nooks and crannies or be worked into carpet- but is an efficient method for treating vertical surfaces. In this article we’ll provide instructions on making a wet DE mix for indoor use.

What You’ll Need

Step 1

Fill the spray bottle with water and add diatomaceous earth. As a general rule, 4 teaspoons of diatomaceous earth per liter of water is a good ratio. Screw the lid on the spray bottle and shake vigorously.

Step 2

Spray the diatomaceous earth mixture in any region in which you’d like to apply DE powder. It’s best to use the “spray” function if your spray bottle has multiple beam options. Hold the spray bottle between 1 and 3 inches from the surface you’d like to target.

Step 3

Wait for the water content of the diatomaceous earth mix to dry. The silica particles of the solution will remain behind after evaporation, leaving an even distribution of diatomaceous earth.

Step 4

Clean up the diatomaceous earth once it delivered the desired effect. If you’re using this method to distribute pest control grade diatomaceous earth, the dust will contain dead insects.

If cleaning from a wall, use a wet cloth to wipe down the surface to catch the dust before it can settle. Repeat the application process as many times as necessary.
