The natural abrasive properties and chemical free attributes of diatomaceous earth, or DE, make it a highly effective natural exfoliator. Many of the facial scrubs and exfoliating gels available on the market today contain sodium lauryl sulfate, which is a powerful corrosive chemical that can cause a huge amount of unwanted health effects.
The composition of diatomaceous earth is over 85% silica in rough microscopic particles. These particles, while not sharp or large enough to damage the skin, are highly effective at removing built up grime, dirt and oil from the pores of the skin.
Gently drawing away dead skin and other unwanted contaminants, a diatomaceous earth scrub is the perfect natural way to keep your skin healthy and youthful.
Diatomaceous earth also contains high amounts of silica that can be used by the body to create collagen, which is used to smooth fine lines, crow's feet and wrinkles.
To create a highly effective diatomaceous earth face scrub, follow these easy steps. You’ll need:
- Diatomaceous Earth
- Warm Water
- A mixing bowl
- Dry Towel
Step 1: Create a DE Cosmetic Paste
To create a diatomaceous earth cosmetic paste, mix one part diatomaceous earth with three parts water. Add both the diatomaceous earth and warm water to the mixing bowl and mix thoroughly until a paste-like consistency is achieved. To create a mask, use less water, and to create a facial scrub use more water.
Step 2: Apply to Face
If using the diatomaceous earth paste as a cleansing mask to draw toxins out from the facial skin, gently apply the paste in circular movements over the forehead, nose and cheeks and leave for 2-5 minutes, allowing the mixture to dry.
While DE is highly effective in drawing toxins from the skin, be sure not to leave it on too long as it is a powerful desiccant and can dehydrate the skin through overexposure.
If using the diatomaceous earth cosmetic paste as a facial scrub, use your fingers to work the paste into the skin of your face and wash away with warm water. Avoid getting the DE paste in your nose or eyes as it can potentially cause irritation.
Step 3: Rinse and Dry
After leaving the paste to dry if using a cleansing mask or rinsing with warm water if scrubbing, rinse the face extensively with cold water to close the pores of the face and encourage collagen synthesis. Dry gently with a clean cloth.
If you’d like to add a luxurious element to your scrub or mask, consider adding a few drops of essential oil to the mix.
We also recommend combining it with bentonite clay which can have many more enhanced benefits.
