Begin by applying a thin layer and working this layer into the carpet with the broom. After this layer is worked into the carpet, apply a second, thicker layer.

Step 3: Wait

Leave the diatomaceous earth on the odorous region for 24-48 hours. For particularly bad odors it’s best to leave the diatomaceous earth application for the full 48 hours. Once you’ve waited long enough, proceed to vacuum up the diatomaceous earth and dispose of it.

It should be noted that the fine silica particles that make up diatomaceous earth are hard for less powerful home vacuums to suck up, and will often damage filtered vacuums, potentially burning out the motor. You may want to consider hiring a shop vac or industrial vacuum for this purpose of you have distributed a large amount of diatomaceous earth.

Step 4: Repeat if Necessary

Repeat this process as many times as necessary until odor is eliminated.
