Sarsaparilla Root – Natural Testosterone Boosting Health Benefits?

on

Sarsaparilla is a tropical plant with the botanical name Smilax ornata from the family Liliiacae. The common names used in place of the scientific name include sarsaparilla root or zarzaparilla – derived from the Spanish language meaning bramble’ and parrillia meaning little grape vine’; which is somewhat a relatively accurate description of the outward appearance of the plant.

It is a prickly or woody climbing vine that grows well in the canopy of the rainforest and is native to South America, Jamaica, the Caribbean, Mexico, Honduras and the West Indies. The root can grow up to fifty yards and produces lustrous black, purple-blue and red berries that are popular among wild birds as well as humans.

A sarsaparilla root usually measures about six to eight feet in length. It is tuberous in shape with no particular taste or smell. This root has been used by the natives for a number of medicinal uses.

Benefits of Sarsaparilla Root

Some of the major benefits of the sarsaparilla root include but are not limited to the following:

1. Anti-tumor and Cancer

A more recent study demonstrated that sarsaparilla had anti-cancer properties in cell lines of multiple types of cancers and in mice. In other studies, at least 24 extracts obtained from the roots, leaves, stem and fruits of sarsaparilla plant aid in the treatment and prevention of cancers naturally.

The roots of the sarsaparilla plant contain some natural steroids and saponins that help in the absorption of other drugs and or herbs, reduce the effects due to inflammation and also have anti-aging properties. According to research done at the University of Queensland in Australia, Sarsaparilla root contains at least five steroidal saponins and two recently discovered furostanol saponins which inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells, most especially those lining the colon.

Breast cancer and liver cancer pre-clinical studies have exhibited anti-tumor properties of sarsaparilla. A number of anti-inflammatories, antioxidant acids, oils, and chemicals are also present which contribute to anti-aging and reducing oxidative stress. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, sarsaparilla root can be used in the treatment of conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and other causes of joint pains and swelling resulting from gout.

2. Liver Protection

Research conducted on mice that had suffered liver damage showed that flavonoids, antioxidants, acids and plant sterols present in sarsaparilla root were indeed able to reverse the damages made on the liver and increase its efficiency.

In addition to this, research shows that sarsaparilla helps in detoxification by binding to bacterial endotoxins within the gastrointestinal tract which relieves the liver of its main function of detoxifying the harmful compounds present in the body. These compounds found in the therapeutic sarsaparilla root herb can be used to get rid of bacterial endotoxins by making them less absorbable in the gut.

That aside, sarsaparilla is a natural anti-diuretic since it promotes urine production and perspiration hence helpful in relieving fluid retention, puffiness, or swelling and also reduces stomach bloating.

3. Treatment of Skin Conditions

The compounds of sarsaparilla root are effective in the treatment of skin conditions such as eczema, rashes, pruritus, wounds from insect bites and also fungus-caused skin infections. This is made possible due to its anti-fungal, antibacterial and also anti-inflammatory effects of the sarsaparilla root.

Herbal remedies help treat skin problems differently from medications since they strengthen the host rather than destroying the vector or manifestation of the disease as does medication.

This is according to The Integrative Medicine and Dermatology Clinic in New York. Studies conducted over the past six decades have shown that sarsaparilla can, in fact, help decrease skin swelling, redness, itching, peeling and formation of blotches.

Astilbin isolates, a flavonoid, from the roots of sarsaparilla has been identified as the active compound responsible for immunosuppressive activities and inhibition against activated T lymphocytes that cause skin inflammation. Sarsaparilla has also been documented decades ago as helping in dramatically improving skin lesion in individuals suffering from psoriasis.

4. Hormonal Balance

Sarsaparilla extracts are usually common ingredients of many natural hormone balancing supplements as it increases the bioavailability and absorption of other herbs and its ability to improve sexual drive and lower impotence.

Research points towards the possibility that saponins and the plant steroids found within sarsaparilla might be of use in mimicking the effects of growth steroids and natural reproductive hormones. Saponins in sarsaparilla also aid in lowering the symptoms of menopause and aging.

5. Coughs, Fevers, and Colds

Sarsaparilla root supplements, tea, and tinctures help in treating fever, coughs, and colds. This is in preventing these scenarios from happening at all in the first place by boosting one’s immunity and fighting bacteria and also treating the symptoms of these conditions once they manifest.

This is by enhancing mucolytic effects and/or inhibiting effects on cough reflexes. Antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds within sarsaparilla break mucus bonds making it less sticky hence phlegm and bacteria are ejected from the body more readily.

Risks and Side Effects

Consuming very high quantities of saponins that are present in sarsaparilla root can cause stomach upsets or discomfort, diarrhea and also indigestion in some individuals. Allergic reactions that resemble asthma can also occur in some people on exposure to sarsaparilla dust or the grounded form of it.

This serves as a caution. As there have been no studies conducted on the use of sarsaparilla in pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, it is best to avoid it or consult your physician before use.
