A small study showed that aloe vera helps alleviate dry skin. In the study, participants who applied aloe vera to dry, irritated skin experienced improvements in skin dryness and redness. The subjects wore special gloves that delivered aloe vera to the skin, but you can make your own. Simply apply aloe vera gel to dry, irritated areas and cover them with gloves or socks to enhance contact with the skin. You can even leave the gloves and socks on overnight.

Increase the Humidity of Your Home

Dry skin is more common in the winter because the air is dryer. A dry home can dehydrate your skin and cause the skin to flake and itch. Add a humidifier to your home to increase the moisture content of the air. Studies show that keeping indoor humidity around 60% can help with skin problems related to excessive dryness.

A Word of Caution

Talk to your physician if you have persistent dry skin. In some cases, dry skin can be a sign of an underlying medical problem, such as an underactive thyroid gland. But, hopefully, you'll get relief from these simple home remedies and will be free of dry, irritated skin!
