Whitening Coach is a teeth whitening treatment that can be performed at home on your own.

The treatment comes in the form of a three step process: you rinse your mouth, apply minty whitening gel into a mouth tray, and then clamp that mouth tray into your mouth for 30 to 60 minutes.

The gel is priced at around $130 for a one month supply, so it’s certainly not cheap.

Whitening Coach seems like a straightforward, easy tooth whitening system. But does it really work? Let’s take a closer look at how Whitening Coach claims to work.

How Does Whitening Coach Work?

Whitening Coach works in a three step process that looks like this:

Step 1) Rinse your mouth thoroughly with water to “prepare your teeth for optimal exposure to Whitening Coach’s effective teeth-whitening ingredients”

Step 2) Squeeze a small amount of Whitening Coach’s “minty whitening gel” along the lower-front portion of each Sure-Fit mouth tray. Avoid over-filling the trays, as you only need a small amount of gel to enjoy the benefits.

Step 3) Place the trays over your upper and lower teeth, biting down gently as you close your mouth. Leave the trays in your mouth for 30 to 60 minutes, then remove the trays and thoroughly brush or rinse any remaining gel from your mouth.

You should avoid swallowing the gel or wearing the trays while sleeping.

If you can follow these straightforward steps, then Whitening Coach claims that it will provide you with prolonged whitening results while also boosting the strength of your teeth.

In fact, Whitening Coach claims to be just as powerful as the teeth whitening gels used in dental offices.

As the manufacturer explains, “Why spend hundreds of dollars and hours in a dental office when you can get exactly what you’re looking for less and do it in the comfort of your own home?”

So what’s actually in Whitening Coach? Let’s take a closer look.

Whitening Coach Ingredients

The active ingredient in Whitening Coach is a 22% carbamide peroxide solution.

The American Dental Association released a statement on the safety and effectiveness of carbamide peroxide tooth whitening products a few years ago.

Here’s how that organization explains carbamide peroxide:

“Carbamide peroxide, used in many bleaching products, breaks down into hydrogen peroxide and urea, with hydrogen peroxide being the active bleaching agent. A bleaching product containing 10 percent carbamide peroxide yields approximately 3.5 percent hydrogen peroxide.”

So basically, carbamide peroxide is just a precursor to hydrogen peroxide.

If a bleaching product containing 10% carbamide peroxide yields 3.5% hydrogen peroxide, then Whitening Coach, with 22% carbamide peroxide, should yield around 7% hydrogen peroxide.

The ADA will sometimes award an ADA Seal of Acceptance to at-home tooth whitening products. Currently, the company only awards that seal to products containing 10% carbamide peroxide.

In addition to carbamide peroxide, Whitening Coach has added xylitol to the ingredients list. The company describes Xylitol as an “all-natural ingredient that’s ADA-approved to help you fight cavities.”

Xylitol is indeed found in many fruits and vegetables that you eat on a daily basis. It’s commonly found in toothpaste, where it’s used to prevent tooth decay and dry mouth. It can also be found in chewing gums and other confectionary items where it’s used as a sugar substitute.

WebMD.com explains that xylitol is “likely effective for preventing dental caries (tooth decay)”. It also adds sweetness to Whitening Coach.

Whitening Coach contains other ingredients that aren’t listed. The manufacturer claims that the gel has a “minty” flavor, for example, but we never learn where that minty flavor comes from.

Side Effects of Whitening Coach

The same ADA statement listed above also mentioned some possible side effects of carbamide peroxide:

“The most commonly observed side effects with these peroxide-based bleaching agents are tooth sensitivity and occasional irritation of soft tissues in the mouth (oral mucosa), particularly the gums. Tooth sensitivity often occurs during early stages of bleaching treatment. Tissue irritation may result from an ill-fitting tray used to contain bleaching product. Both tooth sensitivity and tissue irritation are usually temporary and stop after the treatment.”

In other words, side effects for carbamide peroxide are relatively minor and typically don’t occur for long periods of time.

However, the ADA does claim that “on rare occasions, irreversible tooth damage has been reported.”

The ADA also cautions that studies on carbamide peroxide are relatively limited:

“Patients should be cautioned that not enough information is available to support unsupervised long-term and/or repeated use of bleaching products.”

Should You Use Whitening Coach to Whiten your Teeth?

Whitening Coach uses a proven mixture of 22% carbamide peroxide and xylitol to whiten your teeth. 22% carbamide peroxide breaks down into approximately 7% hydrogen peroxide once it hits your teeth. Both of these ingredients are ADA-approved to whiten your teeth – so Whitening Coach does appear to work as advertised with minimal side effects.

The main problem with Whitening Coach is that it tends to be priced higher than most of its competitors. At $130 for a one month supply, you may be able to find better deals on a 10% or 22% carbamide peroxide teeth whitening solution online.
