Orgain Protein Powder Review

Orgain is an organic protein powder which uses plant-based products to provide a high quality blend of vitamins, minerals, and protein.

Orgain sells a number of different products, including a basic protein powder as well as pre-made shakes and beverages for children.

Unlike most other protein powders, Orgain sources its protein from plant-based materials like brown rice and hemp.

Ultimately, the goal with Orgain was to create a healthy shake which anyone can drink on-the-go. It’s designed to support a busy lifestyle while keeping you healthy and giving your body the nutrients it needs.

Orgain Protein Powder

So what’s the big deal with Orgain? Let’s find out.

The Story Behind Orgain

Most protein powders and nutritional supplements have a boring history: someone wanted to make money, so they made a formula in a lab and then sold that formula with fancy marketing and packaging.

Orgain, however, has a different story, and that story is worth a quick mention. Orgain was made by a guy named Dr. Andrew Abraham. Dr. Abraham was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago. After the diagnosis, he started trying to live a healthier lifestyle.

Unfortunately, Dr. Abraham couldn’t find healthy protein shakes or nutritional blends on the market. Instead, he found non-organic products filled with artificial sweeteners, corn syrup, genetically-modified soy, hormones, antibiotics, and low-quality fillers.

Dr. Abraham knew he could do better, so he created Orgain.

What is Orgain?

Most protein powders are made from synthetic formulas. Orgain, however, takes a different approach.

Orgain aims to be the world’s best organic plant-based protein powder. It does this by putting 21 grams of USDA certified organic plant based protein in each serving. That protein comes from natural plant materials like brown rice, chia, hemp, and pea protein.

Why is plant-based protein so important? Well, plants are one of the few non-dairy sources of protein available in nutritional supplements. Whey and casein protein, for example, are both dairy byproducts (whey is actually the liquid material created as a byproduct during the production of cheese).

Ultimately, that means Orgain has the unique distinction of being a vegan protein powder. Those aren’t easy to find. Usually, the vegan protein powders that you do find are tasteless, lumpy, or otherwise undesirable.

Orgain protein powder is the flagship Orgain product. It’s the one you may have seen at Costco and other brick-and-mortar retailers. Orgain, however, sells a number of other supplements and products as well, including:

— Organic Nutritional Shakes
— Healthy Kids Organic Nutritional Shakes
— 25g Organic Protein Shakes
— Organic Vegan Nutritional Shakes
— Organic Protein Powder

We’ll explore each of these products in further detail below.

Orgain Organic Protein Powder

Orgain’s organic protein powder has some unique qualities compared to other protein powders on the market. It claims to be the smoothest and most delicious protein powder ever made. While other protein powders clump together and taste gritty, Orgain aims to provide a smooth, delicious flavor.

There is no added sugar in Orgain Organic Protein Powder. Each serving also contains 5 grams of organic fiber.

A quick look at the ingredients chart reveals a number of natural ingredients:

Orgain

As you can see, Orgain isn’t lying when it says that it’s made with 100% natural and organic ingredients. The only ingredient people might be concerned about would be Stevia, the low-calorie natural sweetener which has been banned in some countries (including the United States until recently).

Meanwhile, the protein powder itself offers plenty of valuable nutrients you need to get a healthy balanced diet. Orgain claims that a serving size is two rounded scoops, or 46 grams. That’s a lot of powder for some people to take in one serving, but as mentioned above, Orgain claims its powder mixes smoothly with water without grittiness or clumps.

In any case, here’s what you get with two scoops of Orgain Organic Protein Powder:

Despite containing just 13 grams of carbohydrates and 150 calories, Orgain manages to deliver plenty of the valuable vitamins and nutrients your body needs to stay strong and healthy. Calcium, iron, and protein are all found in high levels here.

Orgain Organic Nutritional Shakes

In addition to the Orgain Organic Protein Powder, Orgain makes a number of Organic Nutritional Shakes. These shakes cater to different people – some are marketed towards kids while others are marketed for bodybuilders.

Original Organic Nutritional Shake

The original Orgain nutritional shake claims to be the “world’s first doctor developed ready-to-drink nutritional shake.” The shakes are also certified organic, although unlike the protein powder, they’re not vegan. They do, however, contain fruits, vegetables, and 23 vitamins and minerals. Each shake delivers 16 grams of organic protein from a whey concentrate blend. There are four different flavors, including creamy chocolate fudge, sweet vanilla bean, iced café mocha, and strawberries & cream.

Healthy Kids Organic Nutritional Shake

Orgain aims to get kids interested in nutrition at an early age with tasty, nutritious protein shakes. These shakes contain 8 grams of protein along with an organic fruit and vegetable blend. They also contain 23 vitamins and minerals. The shakes are considered to be organic, although they’re not vegan. They’re marketed towards picky eaters or parents who want to give good meals to their kids on-the-go. There are three flavors: chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry.

25g Organic Protein Shakes

Orgain markets this shake towards bodybuilders. Each shake contains 25 grams of organic protein along with 150 calories and 3 grams of carbohydrates. There are two flavors: vanilla bean and creamy chocolate fudge. The protein is made from milk protein concentrate and whey protein concentrate. These shakes are designed to support lean muscle growth while fueling athletic performance.

Organic Vegan Nutritional Shakes

These shakes are slightly different from the Organic Nutritional Shakes we mentioned above. Instead of using whey protein and milk concentrate, these shakes get their protein from a plant-based blend which includes hemp, brown rice, chia, and flax. There’s also a blend of organic fruits and vegetables and 21 vitamins and minerals. You can order these shakes in smooth chocolate flavor or sweet vanilla bean.

Who Should Take Orgain?

Orgain markets its products towards a number of different groups of people. It claims that Orgain shakes and protein powders are great for anyone looking for the following:

— Busy Professionals
— Moms On-The-Go
— Athletes
Weight Management
— Organic Nourishment
— Students

Basically, Orgain delivers essential vitamins, nutrients, and proteins when your body needs it most. They also come in delicious, convenient protein shakes (unless you’re buying the powder, in which case you’ll need to make the shakes yourself).

Buying Orgain

Orgain can be purchased from a wide range of online and offline retailers. Amazon sells Orgain Organic Protein, for example, which can be used to make your own protein shakes.

You can also buy the ready-to-drink creamy chocolate fudge Orgain supplements from The Vitamin Shoppe and other supplement stores. Interestingly enough, Costco also sells bulk Orgain protein powder: a 2.74 pound container costs $29.99 and you can order it online or in-store.

The official Orgain website is actually more expensive than Costco: the website sells Organic Protein Powder in 2.02lb canisters for $39.99 (although you can reduce that price to $37.49 by ordering 4 canisters at a time).

Meanwhile, the organic nutritional shakes cost between $3.19 and $3.69 per carton, depending on how many you order. A 36 pack will cost you $114.84 ($3.19 per carton), while a 4 pack will cost you $13.76 ($3.44 per carton).

The Healthy Kids shakes are a little less expensive and are priced between $2.33 per carton (when you order a 12 pack) and $2.69 per carton (ordered individually).

When you order on the official Orgain website, you can enjoy free shipping on orders over $100. The website also regularly has “10% off” promotions for various times of the year.

Whether you buy it from Costco or the official Orgain website, you’re getting the same quality product. I’ve never found a price cheaper than Costco, although you might be able to dig up some deals online with a little shopping.

Conclusion: Who Should Take Orgain?

There are dozens of good protein powder manufacturers out there today. However, Orgain has carved a unique niche for itself as a high-quality provider of organic protein. It’s one of the few manufacturers to sell vegan protein using a plant-based blend of hemp and brown rice, although you can also order standard whey protein blends.

Each Orgain product has a rich blend of vitamins and minerals. There are shakes for kids, shakes for adults, shakes for bodybuilders, and shakes for vegans. Whether you’re trying to build lean muscle mass or just trying to keep your kids healthy, Orgain has a wide range of high-quality products that actually live up to their reputation of being healthy, delicious, and organic.

  1. Is someone with some knowledge supposed to be replying to these questions? Reading all of this just killed 10 minutes of my life, never mind the stevia.

  2. Orgain is complete junk. All their products (even the plant-based ones) are filled with gums, fillers, artificial sweeteners, and “natural” flavors. Their liquid shakes have over 10 grams of added sugar each (the kid’s one has the most sugar at 12 grams–that is NOT a healthy snack)

If you’re looking for a plant protein powder with clean, healthy, organic ingredients and not highly processed crap, try Pure Food Plant Protein Powder with Probiotics.

  3. I saw it was organic and I like the taste. Unfortunately my stomach does not like the stevia. Are there any great tasting organic plant based proteins out there without the stevia?

  4. I’m getting a slight headache from this powder. I feel unbalanced since I started drinking this? Anyone else had this problem?

    • I just purchased the creamy fudge Plant based powder today and had my first shake with almond milk and almonds. I did get a headache before drinking half my shake and didn’t want to finish it. I thought it was because it was chocolate and I don’t like chocolate. Tomorrow morning I’m going to put only one scoop and this time use a frozen with almond milk. Are you still having headaches?

  5. I am also wondering if this is a complete protein. I dont care that it has no saturated fat saturated fat is good for you only people that want to make money off your sickness and the mindless drones that follow them will tell you Saturated fat is bad. Its the glucose spikes that cause damage to the internal vain.

  6. I actually prefer a USDA Organic whole food protein blend from Ora, the flavour is a lot nicer and the texture a lot smoother. It also includes a lot more fruits and vegetables so I satisfy my fiber needs a lot better than the other plant-based proteins.

  7. I love the great taste it had the right amount of protein but there was one ingredient that caused me to have severe headaches, and sent my blood pressure through the roof. The ingredient that’s caused these issues was erythritol which is achemical sweetener. I don’t understand why that had to be added when there’s monkfruit and stevia

  8. It also has 0 cholesterol. I’ve lifted weights for over 30 years, and have always used protein supplements. Now that I’m approaching 50 years old, cholesterol has become a problem. I was surprised that some of my other protein powders had over 30% of my daily cholesterol limit. Not a good way to start off your day.

    I’m very happy with Orgain.

    • Eating cholesterol does not raise cholestrol in the blood streem. The fats are in your blood stream because your body is trying to repair damaged bloid vessels. You need to wach your sugar intake that is whats hurting your blood vessels . Then your body wont need to sends cholestrol to repair the vain.

  9. I’ve been using Orgain protein powder with a frozen banana and frozen dark cherries and it is divine. I am addicted to this drink.

  10. Has there been any testing for heavy metals? I read an article a few months back. There is a concern over plant based protein and the contamination of metals like cadmium, arsenic, lead and mercury.

    • It’s organic, and that’s the selling point for organic foods. The plants were raised free of fertilizers, pesticides, etc.

    • Haha.
But animal stuff is ok with you? Much more contamination. And none that you mentioned will change your life if you are healthy/exercising. In otherwords… if you are here, paying attentuin to your health, those metals won’t bother you.

      • Your comment shows a complete ignorance on the subject. “that you mentioned” are heavy metals. They accumulate in your body – you will take every micro gram you ingest over your lifetime with you in the grave. Mildly elevated level results in cognitive impairment, higher levels can result in organ failure. And any symptoms developed are irreversible. The fact that the rice is organic is beyond the point because the rice leeches it out of the ground so rice that has been grown in heavy metal rich soil, as in south east Asia, will be high in heavy metals, organic or not.

Sure, eating a buffalo that has been fed rice all its live will result in higher intake of heavy metails than eating the rice directly but as far as heavy metals go you are better of eating protein from north american whey every day of the week.

  12. Is it ok for the children to drink a shake made with half a scoop of the vanilla powder. My kids love my shake made with vanilla powder, milk, and a frozen banana blended together!
