Eat Wholly – Natural Gluten Free Guacamole Dips & Recipes?

on

Eat Wholly is a food brand best-known for its Wholly Guacamole. Find out everything you need to know about Wholly Guacamole today in our review.

What is Eat Wholly Guacamole?

Wholly Guacamole isn’t just a clever play on words: it’s a reference to the fact that the product contains “whole” avocado ingredients. There’s no preservatives and no gluten, and it’s made from hand-scooped avocados.

Wholly Guacamole is available in a few different varieties – including mini dip products, larger dip sizes, and Wholly Chunky Avocado mixes.

Wholly Guacamole is made by food distributor Hormel Foods. The Hormel Foods official website reports that the dip has been “America’s number one selling branded guacamole for nine consecutive years”.

How is Wholly Guacamole Made?

If you’ve ever cut an avocado then left it to dry, then you know it goes brown very quickly. If you make guacamole, then leave it in the fridge overnight, it looks disgusting the next day. So how did Wholly Guacamole create a guacamole dip that stays fresh without the use of preservatives?

Hormel Foods uses high pressure processing (HPP) techniques to preserve the flavor, texture, and nutrition of the ingredients while maintaining a high level of food safety standards. The company claims these are the same principles their founder, Don Bowden, devised in 1989. The Wholly Guacamole recipe was created in 2003.

The company uses Hass avocados that are gluten-free and kosher certified. The avocados are hand-scooped to create the guacamole. We don’t know much about the manufacturing process from the official website, so it’s unclear if someone is literally scooping out avocados by hand, or if they use some sort of machine. However, “hand scooped” typically means a human being is scooping each avocado by hand.

The main way in which Eat Wholly Guacamole prevents browning, however, is by using smaller packaging. Instead of delivering your guacamole in a large container, Wholly Guacamole uses small, sealed packages suitable for a single snack or meal. If you leave those packages unsealed in your fridge, then you’ll notice some browning.

Today, you can use Wholly Guacamole as a dip for veggies or pretzels, as a burger topping, as a sandwich or wrap spread, or for any other meal of the day.

Types of Wholly Guacamole

Wholly Guacamole is available in a number of different sizes and varieties, including:

  • 8oz, 12oz, and 16oz sizes
  • Classic, Spicy, Avocado Ranch, Spicy Homestyle, Organic, and 100% Chunky Avocado varieties available
  • New flavors including Margarita Flavored, Chipotle Lime Flavored, Sriracha Flavored, Hatch Chile, Three Chile, and Guacamole & Spicy Pico are now available

Eat Wholly Guacamole Ingredients

As you may have guessed from the name, Wholly Guacamole contains mostly Hass avocados. In fact, on the Chunky Avocado product, Hass avocados are the only ingredient listed.

Meanwhile, the base guacamole recipe remains the same across the products:

Hoss avocado, jalapeno puree (white vinegar, jalapeno peppers, salt), dehydrated onion, salt, granulated garlic

That’s it! The company’s guacamole has 70 calories per serving, 3g of carbs per serving, and 2g of fiber per serving.

Obviously, the flavors have some additional ingredients. The Three Chile flavor, for example, contains the following list of ingredients:

Hass avocado, poblano pepper, tomatillo, tomato, hatch chile, vinegar, jalapeño pepper, onion, salt, dehydrated onion, cilantro, granulated garlic, sugar, lime juice, black pepper, cumin, natural flavor, green chile powder, citric acid, and malic acid

For spicier flavors, Wholly Guacamole typically contains red pepper and a higher amount of jalapeno. The Margarita flavor and other unique flavors are relatively new, and the ingredients are not yet listed on the official website.
