What is Somatik?
Somatik is a cannabis-infused coffee that claims to contain “just the right dose” of both caffeine and cannabis to give you a mild feeling of euphoria along with a balanced experience. It has a light-bodied, smooth flavor with notes of cherry and just a hint of cannabis flavor. It also has undertones of bright lemon.
Somatik just recently appeared online through get.somatik.us. The company was founded in 2016, and first started making headlines in January 2017, after they teamed up with fellow San Francisco-based Ritual Coffee Roasters.
You can find Somatik at a growing number of dispensaries across the Bay Area of San Francisco. Each bottle – which contains about 15mg of medical-grade cannabis – is priced at between $10 and $12.
Who Makes Somatik?
Somatik was founded by Christopher Schroeder. According to an interview by the San Francisco Chronicle, Schroeder had no previous experience with beverages or cannabis before founding the Oakland-based company in 2016.
However, he knew one thing: he wanted to make the perfect artisanal, pot-infused cold brew. He had the cannabis – and now he just needed to team up with the right coffee roaster.
That’s when Schroeder met Ritual Coffee founder Eileen Rinaldi. The two taste-tested 40 different coffees direct from growers in Colombia before choosing the one used in Somatik.
Today, the beans used in Somatik are roasted and ground at Ritual’s SoMa roaster, then delivered to Somatik’s manufacturing facility in South Bay. The beans steep for 12 hours in cold water to deliver a rich, smooth concentrate. That concentrate is then strained and blended with THC oil. The solution is placed in a bottle and sold.
The bottle is labeled as “Delightful, delicious, & worth waking up to. (Just like you).”
Somatik Ingredients
Somatik comes in 8 ounce bottles. Each bottle contains about 15mg of THC (which works out to about 1.5 standard doses of marijuana in each bottle).
Some people drink Somatik straight, while others dilute it with water, cream, almond milk, or the preferred coffee mixer of your choice.
Somatik Pricing
Somatik can be ordered at dispensaries across the Bay Area of San Francisco, and the company is seeking to expand to other parts of California over the coming months.
At dispensaries, Somatik is typically priced at around $11 per bottle. Some dispensaries let you order online for later pick-up. However, Somatik is not available to order directly online.
