Oreo Thins – Healthy Alternative Or Still Sugar Filled Cookies?

on

Following a healthy, balanced, and nutritional diet is a powerful way to retain total body health until old age. While healthy eating is important, however, it’s also important to indulge in the occasional treat. Top athletes, bodybuilders, and professional sports players all incorporate a “cheat day” or “cheat meal” element into their nutritional strategy to enjoy a guilty treat every now and then.

The Oreo cookie has been one of the most popular sugary treats around the world for more than 100 years, and is sold in almost every country. Defined by a creamy filling between two chocolate biscuit wafers, Oreos are the highest selling biscuit in the United States.

Despite the extreme popularity of the Oreo Cookie, they’re actually quite high in sugar and caloric content. The average Oreo Cookie contains 45 calories, 27 of which are sourced directly from carbohydrates. Each Oreo Cookie also contains a massive 16.5 grams of fat, which is not ideal for the average fitness or health enthusiast.

Nabisco, the brand behind the Oreo Cookie, is not unaware of the rising popularity of the health and fitness movement. In response to increasing consumer demand for healthy food choices, Nabisco has recently released the Oreo Thin cookie, a slimmer, lighter, and less unhealthy alternative to the traditional Oreo Cookie.

In this article, we’ll check out the Oreo Thins formula and find out what makes it different from the average Oreo to help you determine whether they’re the right guilty treat for your next cheat meal.

What Are Oreo Thins?

Oreo Thins are a new type of Oreo Cookie released by Nabisco that offer a slightly healthier alternative with virtually the same formula as the traditional Oreo. The Oreo Thin formula contains about one half gram less creme filling than the average Oreo, but a noticeably thinner cookie base.

The Oreo Thin contains 18 less calories per cookie than the standard Oreo, and tastes virtually the same, although a little crispier due to the thinner biscuit base. A major difference between the new Oreo Thins and traditional Oreos, however, is the package size.

Each package of Oreo Thins weighs in at 10.1 ounces, which is a significant drop from the average 14.3 ounces of the original Oreos. While this should reflect a price drop, it doesn’t- Oreo Thins are priced exactly the same as regular Oreos. Whether this is a step in a healthy direction for Nabisco or a marketing ploy to charge the same for less product is open to interpretation.

Oreo Thins Nutritional Profile

Although Oreo Thins may not be as cost effective as original Oreos, they are significantly cheaper. One Oreo Thin cookie contains just 35 calories, with just 5 grams of total carbs. Each Oreo Thin cookie contains just three grams of sugar, which doesn’t throw out the daily macronutrient balance too much.

Nabisco recommends a single serving of four cookies, which is ideal for a mid afternoon indulgence or a small dessert after a cheat meal. One serving of four Oreo Thins amounts to 140 calories, which is less than the average protein shake, and 12 grams of sugar, which is around the daily recommended processed sugar intake.

Oreo Thins Verdict

While the new Oreo Thins formula is not a super-healthy option, they still present a healthier alternative to traditional Oreo cookies and are ideal as a small cheat snack when you’re feeling the need for a sugary, chocolately treat.
