What is Leomo?
Leomo is a San Diego, California-based company that has created a lineup of sport devices for cyclists. The wearable devices use smart sensors, advanced analytics, and a cloud-based system to provide data-driven feedback based on the latest sports science.
The company received $5.8 million in funding back in 2015. In March 2017, the company revealed its flagship fitness tracking system, the Type-R. The company has designed its devices to help athletes elevate their performance. They claim their sensors deliver a new level of accuracy.

The company’s flagship product is called Type-R. That product is now accepting open beta applicants, and Leomo appears to be preparing to release the device later in 2017. However, release date and pricing information have not yet been revealed.
How Does Leomo’s Type-R Work?
Leomo’s flagship product is called Type-R. The company claims Type-R is” the first in a new category of wearable technology specifically designed to empower competitive athletes and their coaches with portable, accurate, real-time motion analysis”.
Type-R consists of a series of small square-shaped device that you attach to your shoes, thighs, and pelvis. Then, you attach a display to the front of your handlebars. The square-shaped sensor tracks your foot pedal speed, and the display shows all relevant data. Here are some of the key features of the Type-R system:
- Motion Sensors: Leomo’s Type-R comes with five small, lightweight, rechargeable Bluetooth sensors. Each sensor has its own three-axis gyroscope and three-axis accelerometer. The sensors are worn on the thighs, feet, and pelvis. They’re capable of recording the rider’s movement at 100 data points per second. All of this data is sent to the Type-R display.
- Display: This display attaches to the front of your handlebars. The display can attach to ANT+ based sensors, but it can also track certain measurements on its own. For example, it calculates power balance, cadence, speed, and heart rate along with Motion Performance Indicators, or MPIs, which is essentially motion quantified as values. You can display data using graphs, maps, or other tools on the display.
- Data Analysis: After a ride, you can upload your activity data to a tablet or computer. You can see how your motion data, power, cadence, speed, heart rate, elevation, and more compare with your other rides. You can view all of this data through any conventional web browser.
- Companion App: Leomo offers a Type-R companion app called the Leomo Link. The app is available for free for Android and iOS.

About Leomo
Leomo is based in Newport Beach, California and Tokyo, Japan. The headquarters are in San Diego. The company was founded by Kunihiko Kaji and Taizo Son. Kaji is the CEO and a member of the LEOMOBellmare Racing Team, while Son is a serial entrepreneur and investor who previously co-founded GungHo and launched Yahoo Japan.
The two co-founded the company in 2012. In May 2016, the company rebranded to Leomo from Lemonade Lab, Inc. As of March 2017, the company employs 28 people. They received $5.8 million in venture funding from one investor (FIH Mobile) in August 2015.
