What Is Indolepropionic Acid?

Indolepropionic Acid is a deamination product of tryptophan that is formed by symbiotic bacteria inside the gastrointestinal tract of birds and mammals. Its other chemical names are 3-Indolepropionic acid, 1H-Indole-3-propanoic acid, 3-(1H-Indol-3-yl) propionic acid, and 830-96-6.

Its molecular formula is C11H11N02 and it has a molecular weight of 189.214 g/mol. There are many ways by which Indolepropionic acid can be synthesized but the most convenient one consists of the hydrolysis of 3-indolpropionitrile that has been obtained from the reaction of acrylonitrile and indole.

It is soluble in ethanol and has a melting point of 134˚C – 135˚C. It’s a powder with an appearance of a yellow to brown color.
