What Is Indolepropionic Acid?

Indolepropionic Acid is a deamination product of tryptophan that is formed by symbiotic bacteria inside the gastrointestinal tract of birds and mammals. Its other chemical names are 3-Indolepropionic acid, 1H-Indole-3-propanoic acid, 3-(1H-Indol-3-yl) propionic acid, and 830-96-6.

Its molecular formula is C11H11N02 and it has a molecular weight of 189.214 g/mol. There are many ways by which Indolepropionic acid can be synthesized but the most convenient one consists of the hydrolysis of 3-indolpropionitrile that has been obtained from the reaction of acrylonitrile and indole.

It is soluble in ethanol and has a melting point of 134˚C – 135˚C. It’s a powder with an appearance of a yellow to brown color.

What Is It Used For?

It greatly decreases oxidative stress, the death of primary neurons as well as neuroblastoma cells that are exposed to the amyloid beta-protein that is in the form of amyloid fibrils. Amyloid fibrils is among the most prominent neuropathologic features that characterize Alzheimer’s disease.
