Alison Sweeney Fights Fake Diet Pill Scam

Former “Biggest Loser” star Alison Sweeney is the target of an online scam claiming that she took diet pills while competing on the reality TV show. And instead of letting the scammers win – she’s deciding to fight back.

Sweeney appeared on Dr. Oz’s May 24 episode, where she spoke out against the false diet pill advertisements that have been spreading online through social media.

Alison Sweeney Does Not Back Diet Pill

Those advertisements feature her name and an endorsement for a scammy diet pill. Understandably, she’s decided to fight back.

Sweeney First Realized They Were Using Her Name When Fans Started Asking Her About the Product On Twitter

When news about the diet pill scam first broke, Sweeney’s fans were the first to notice. They started messaging her on social media asking about her endorsement of the diet pill. They also started asking her why she was saying all of these horrible things about the Biggest Loser on social media – like the fact that all the contestants cheat by using the scammy diet pill.

Sweeney ignored the complaints at first, thinking they weren’t a big deal. Soon enough, however, one fan sent her a link to the actual site featuring her quotes.

“Finally a fan sent me the link. It almost makes me hot under the collar talking about it. They sent me a link to this page that shows this quote that I never said, saying terrible things that I had said…claimed I said about the Biggest Loser and the contestants and whatever”, explained Sweeney on the Dr. Oz Show.

The site was purposely built to resemble a tabloid news website – like Us Weekly. When people visited the site, they assumed it was an authoritative news source

The article also featured a Photoshopped tweet from Sweeney’s own Twitter account – something she had never tweeted. Here’s what that tweet said:

“To all my fans, I deeply and sincerely apologize for misleading you. I cannot let this scam to continue, the weight loss results of contestants for the past 5 years has been all due to #garciniacambogia #biggestloserscam”

The picture of the tweet shows that it has 45.3k retweets and 39.4k favorites – so understandably, people would read the news, see the tweet, see Sweeney’s picture and name attached to it, and think it’s a real news article.

The article goes on to explain that all stars on the show use the pill. There’s also another fake quote from Sweeney saying:

“For ratings sake, the producers conjured up the plan to use something to accelerate contestant weight loss. They then sought the help of several weight-loss physicians and found an all-natural weight management combo called Garcinia Cambogia, which helped cut weight loss time threefold.”

“It Made Me So Angry for Fans to Think It Was True”

Ultimately, the point of this scam was to advertise garcinia cambogia supplements online: the scammy diet pills that are backed by virtually no evidence (and often contain more caffeine than garcinia cambogia anyway).

Clearly, whoever created the fake article wanted to sell garcinia cambogia supplements – and they weren’t afraid to ruin Sweeney’s reputation to do it.

When news about the issue first started to break, Sweeney individually tweeted fans back claiming it wasn’t true.

Eventually, as the story grew and grew, Alison posted a video to her Facebook page explaining her side of the story. That video was posted on March 7. To date, it has over 660,000 views:

“I am appalled by this bogus internet scam that is out there lying to you my friends and my fans, and I just want you to know that I would never support or endorse a product that doesn’t encourage living a healthy lifestyle,” Sweeney explains in the video.

Sweeney Has Hired a Hollywood Law Firm to Tackle the Case

To defend her reputation, Sweeney has hired Hollywood powerhouse law firm Lavely & Singer – which is the same law firm that has represented Bill Cosby, Charlie Sheen, and Quentin Tarantino in major cases.

The Days of Our Lives actress is claiming that the “trolls on the internet” have committed a form of identity theft – and she’s going to fight back with everything she has.
