Trim Healthy Mama Review
Trim Healthy Mama is one of the most-talked about diet books of the last few years. After it was released in 2012, it fueled a storm of responses across the internet: some positive and some negative.
In Trim Healthy Mama, two women named Serene and Pearl coach women through a weight loss program. The book includes 640 pages of recipes, diet guides, supplement information, and exercise routines.
Trim Healthy Mama’s subtitle is: “No More Fads: A Common Sense Guide to Satisfy Your Cravings and Energize Your Life.”
Does Trim Healthy Mama live up to that promise? Find out today in our review.
What is Trim Healthy Mama?
Trim Healthy Mama is a book published by two moms named Serene Allison and Pearl Barett. The book was released in 2012 and is currently available as a paperback, hardcover, and e-book.
The book begins by drawing people from all different nutritional backgrounds together: including paleo, high-carb, vegetarian, vegan, and fad dieters from all walks of life.
After gathering all these people together, the authors explain why all of these dietary approaches are lacking. Then, they introduce a new diet plan which they call the “common sense” plan.
That common sense diet involves separating fats and carbs. That doesn’t mean you can’t eat those foods – it just means you should avoid meals that contain both fat and carbs. You should also reduce your overall consumption of fats and carbs.
How Does Trim Healthy Mama Work?
Trim Healthy Mama works on the principle that eating fat and carbs at the same time doubles our body’s fat storage.
Our bodies use fats and carbs to produce energy. However, it processes fats and carbs in different ways. When eaten together, the body gives glucose (from carbs) priority. The remaining energy (fat) is stored as excess fuel for later use.
Of course, our bodies rarely need to actually store that fat for later use. “Later use” usually means “it’s going to stay on the body for the rest of our lives.”
As a result, we gain weight and have trouble sticking to our dietary goals.
Rules of the Trim Healthy Mama Diet
1) Reduce Overall Caloric Intake
2) Reduce Fat Intake Fats (aim for healthy fats as opposed to processed fats)
3) Reduce Carbohydrate Intake (aim for healthy carbs, like whole grains)
This isn’t some revolutionary weight loss breakthrough: these are just rules that reinforce some of the nutritional guidelines we’ve developed over the past few decades of research.
The value of Trim Healthy Mama doesn’t come from these dietary rules: instead, the value comes from the recipe lists and healthy eating tips. As mentioned above, there are about 600 pages of recipes and guidelines included in this book.
Downsides of Trim Healthy Mama
At the top of this article, I mentioned that Trim Healthy Mama has faced some criticism across the internet. That criticism is centered on three main points:
— “It’s just the Atkin’s diet”. The subtitle of the book is “No More Fads!”, but the women advertise the advantages of the Atkin’s diet or something similar. The diet simply involves eating fewer carbs, fewer sugars, and eating lots of fake substitutes.
— Speaking of fake substitutes, the women recommended hydrogenated sugar alcohols like xylitol and erythritol, both of which have been associated with some dangerous side effects.
— Both women also seem to love stevia, a natural low-calorie sugar replacement made from a plant. The jury is still out on stevia, although more and more research is suggesting that it acts as an abortificacient, which means it leads to a higher likelihood of miscarriage. Stevia, like other sugar replacements, could also disrupt intestinal flora and your body’s natural glucose, which ultimately leads to weight gain. Many people are lured in by stevia because it’s a natural compound. But as one reviewer argues, “arsenic is also a natural compound!”
Essentially, these criticisms revolve around the idea that Trim Healthy Mama is just a low-calorie, low-carb, low-fat diet which recommends using some unproven chemical compounds as substitutes for your diet.
Who Should Read Trim Healthy Mama?
Trim Healthy Mama is a collection of dietary principles from women who claim to have solved the riddle of weight loss. It’s very similar to the Atkins diet in that it recommends cutting out carbohydrates – so you can expect weight loss results similar to the Atkins diet.
The book has been surprisingly well-received across the internet. It has an average customer rating of 4.5 stars out of 5 on Amazon with approximately 1000 reviews thus far.
It also has a lot more substance than your typical diet manual, clocking in at 640 pages.
You don’t have to follow every rule and restriction to enjoy the benefits of Trim Healthy Mama: some women just purchase this book for the healthy recipe tips and ingredients.
Whether you’re trying to lose pesky weight or just looking for tastier meals moms can make easily and afford-ably at home, Trim Healthy Mama could give you the weight loss support you need – just don’t expect any revolutionary diet tips beyond “eating fewer carbs” and “eating healthy fats”.
I have tried this diet, and their “on-plan sweetners with stevia just about killed my guts. I had to do probiotics for a while to get my stomach back to normal. This diet plan is a lot of work, and expensive! I think it does work, but again, it’s a ton of work and expense! Hopefully they will find ways to become more practical as it becomes popular.
Supplement Police: the person who gave the review didn’t read the book. The Atkins diet requires you go low carbs to no carbs (which is dangerous because your body needs carbs). The THM plan is all food.. there are no gimmicks etc. You have 2 types of meals. S vs E. S is satisfying.. meaning higher in good fats, and lower in carbs with protein, the E meal Energy is low in fat, higher in carbs with Protein. Protein is encouraged at every meal. The only food they suggest you not eat is White Flour, White Rice, and White Sugar which is known to be horrible for people anyway and bad for those who are Gluten intolerant etc. They also suggest that if you are doing the plan to lose weight that you hold off on eating starchy vegetables because those do hinder weight loss.. They recommend Stevia ones that do not have Sugar and Maltodextrin mixed with them and NO Artificial sugars. Countless Doctors and research online has stated that white sugar is bad for you, and causes inflammation and other issues. and Artificial sugar has been linked to cancer etc.. Some say Stevia causes Fertility issues and miscarriage.. There was a large study in Thailand that showed that Stevia did not cause any fertility or miscarriage in any of the Hamsters or Rats… If you read the actual testimonals of the people who have lost weight and have been able to go off of medicines that they have been on all of their lives or have been diabetic but lost the weight and now they are not, you would know that its a great way of just plain healthy eating. the nice thing is that these testimonials are from women and men who have nothing to gain from it. They are not distributors, they are not selling anything, or trying to get anyone to buy into gimmicks etc. I started it about a week ago after a friend told me because she knew I was struggling with weight loss due to Thyroid disease. She had fertility issues, and had a miscarriage before she started this plan, was overweight and wanted to be healthier. She has went from a size 22 to a size 14 and is very healthy and is eating basically what she wants. They tell you in the book, that you will have cheat days and you can eat this but know your body wont burn fat as well as it would without it, they have their own blends of flours and sweeteners for sell, but also tell you what is in them so you can make your own and not have to buy theirs. To me that is a company that is helping others because they desire to help others not make a lot of money. yes they have sold books, and a really great cook book. I didnt want to buy their flours so I made my own… So the review was really off and not factual at all. So what I follow.
I had already dropped wheat and white flour before reading the book, I added pure organic Stevia to my diet, dropped white sugar, I now shop the outside aisles of the store, I love the cook book and the plan and love that my whole family can do it, because all it is food… and that they are not pushing me to buy any pills, or shakes or anything that I can not get in my grocery store that isnt food…
I don’t think they read the book either! Low calorie? Where did they read that?Be careful with the heavy S things like cheese and peanut butter but, Please, bring on da’buttah!
I have read the book. This review does not line up with the book. While there are a few points within the review that line up with the book the majority of the review includes information that is not factual. Sounds like you need to delete this review and have someone that has read the book write a review for you. The plan can not be referred to as being like the Atkin’s diet because within the THM the writer’s even mention how unhealthy the Atkin’s diet is ling term since it eliminates carbs. There as so many things not correct in this review the only thing to do is rewrite it.
I second this comment… they obviously didn’t “actually” read the book. I have steadily lost 8-10lbs a month with out gaining it back. My A1C, cholesterol and liver numbers are all greatly IMPROVED and I am not down from 302lbs to 240lbs and still losing while my body heals and loving life… THM has been the best thing to ever happen to me and has literally saved my life! Best of all it offers food freedom, easy to customize to fit your life style and health needs and comes with tons of support… just search through the dozens of FB groups!
agree.. the article is misleading. First THM is not a health supplement. Second they do not tell you to eat low fat and low carb.. if the book was truly read and looked at it you will see that they say you need your carbs and fat, just not together. So if you are eating something high in fat it should be low in carbs, if high in carbs then low in fat… Usually when something is working and people are getting healthy from it and it doesnt involve any pills or shakes people review it and lo and behold they have a pill or something that works better. This is just whole healthy food….
This is not an actual book review by someone who has read and understood the book or program at all.
The book is about separation of fats and carbs, it is not a low carb diet. S meals on the plan are low carb meals with healthy fats. E meals are low fat, complex carb containing meals. All meals contain protein for blood sugar stabilization. Fat, protein, and carbs are all CRITICAL parts of the success of meals on the plan and the authors specifically and repeatedly warn against trying to make this a low carb plan.
So if we wanted to cubbyhole what type of plan this is, it is not a low carb plan, but a food combining plan.

I have high suspicions that you have never read the entire book and wrote the “review” based off information that you’ve gathered from other sites and reviews. You’ve left out a lot of critical information and added info that simply does not coincide with the actual book.
