Somnis is a new natural sleep aid that promises to help anyone get a full night’s rest using natural ingredients. Here’s our review.
What is Somnis?
Somnis is a nutritional supplement that promises to help you feel refreshed and alert for the day ahead. The supplement uses natural ingredients to help you fall asleep more quickly – and stay asleep all night.
Somnis is available through Amazon, where it’s priced at $15.95 for a supply of 60 capsules (one month supply).
Somnis, by the way, is the plural of somnus, which is a Latin word that means sleep or drowsiness. With that language lesson in mind, let’s take a closer look at how Somnis works.
How Does Somnis Work?
Somnis is a nutritional supplement that claims to use a blend of all-natural ingredients to promote a healthier sleep.
Just how natural are these sleeping pills? Well, the pills list four active ingredients, including:
— 125mg of Gamma Aminobutyric Acid (GABA)
— 125mg of L-Tryptophan
— 10mg of Vitamin B (500% Daily Value)
— 2mg of Melatonin
You can find similar ingredients in many other sleep supplements. They’ve all been linked to a better sleep in some way or another.
Melatonin, for example, is produced by the body when it’s ready to fall asleep. You can also take it orally to “kickstart” your body’s sleep cycles into action.
Meanwhile, ingredients like GABA have been shown to promote a type of relaxed focus.
What does science have to say about the dosages used in Somnis?
Well, SleepFoundation.org reports that a typical dose of melatonin is between 1 and 3mg, which makes Somnis right in the middle of the average dose. At that dose, the Sleep Foundation reports, you can “elevate your blood melatonin levels to 1 to 20 times normal”.
There’s one problem with melatonin: we don’t actually know if it works at all. The Sleep Foundation follows up the above statement by stating the following:
“However, when scientists conduct tests to compare melatonin as a “sleeping pill” to a placebo (sugar pill) most studies show no benefit of melatonin.”
So why is melatonin thought to be an effective sleep aid? Well, it has shown evidence that it can reset your body clock – like if you’re managing symptoms of jet lag and shift work sleep disorder.
Ultimately, Somnis contains the right dosage of melatonin to help you fall asleep if your body clock is off-kilter, but melatonin doesn’t actually appear to improve your sleep.
GABA, on the other hand, is a popular sleep aid typically sold in capsules of 500mg to 1000mg, which makes the 125mg dose in Somnis seem relatively small. GABA acts as a neuro-inhibitory transmitter, which is what your brain releases when it needs to shut itself down. As BulletproofExec.com explains, “it will dramatically calm you.” That site also recommends starting at a dose of 500mg before working your way up to higher doses.
Some people also take GABA during the day when they need to relieve stress or take the jittery edge off of their morning coffee break. It’s not exclusively to help you fall asleep.
Finally, L-Tryptophan is another popular sleep aid. It’s an amino acid that naturally occurs in plant and animal proteins. It’s an essential amino acid because your body can’t make it on its own: you must get it through your diet. WebMD.com claims that L-Tryptophan is “used for insomnia, sleep apnea, depression, anxiety, facial pain” and other conditions – including smoking cessation.
Once again, the dose of L-Tryptophan in Somnis appears to be relatively small: when taken to calm the mind, L-Tryptophan is typically taken in doses of 6 grams per day, according to WebMD.
Meanwhile, another site shows that the ideal dose of L-Tryptophan to encourage healthy sleep is 1,000 to 1,500mg taken a couple hours before bedtime.
Somnis lists all of the following ingredients on its product packaging:
As you can see, Somnis doesn’t overwhelm users with a long list of chemical ingredients or synthetic formulas. The formula is straightforward and uses ingredients that have been proven – in some way or another – to enhance your sleep.
The makers of Somnis claim that the supplement is manufactured in the United States in an FDA-approved facility, although they don’t state where the ingredients are sourced.
Somnis is available online through Amazon, where you will pay the following rates:
— 1 Bottle (60 Capsules): $15.95
That’s pretty much the same pricing as most other sleep aids on the market, although it’s slightly lower than competitors like SOMSA ($17.95 on Amazon) and LUNA ($20.85 on Amazon). So if you’re looking to save a few dollars while still enjoying a good night’s sleep, then Somnis may be the perfect choice for you.
Who Makes Somnis?
Somnis is made by a company that does business under the name Somnis Sleep Aid. You can get in touch with the company by phone at 1-877-763-6663 or by email at [email protected]. There’s limited information available online about Somnis’s manufacturer – although the company does claim to manufacture the supplement in an FDA-registered facility within the United States.
Should You Use Somnis to Improve your Sleep?
Somnis is a natural sleep aid that uses active ingredients like 2mg of melatonin and 125mg of L-Tryptophan. It’s not the most powerful sleep aid on the market in terms of dosage strength, but it does contain clinically-backed ingredients that can be found in many other sleep supplements on the market.
It’s also available at a fair price, costing around $16 for a one month supply of 60 capsules from Amazon. If you’re looking to fall asleep more easily – and stay asleep until the morning – then Somnis appears to be a good option.
