What Is Smart Cambridge Mask?
Smart Cambridge Mask is a filtration mask that recently launched on Kickstarter. The mask promises to measure your breathing activity, analyze the pollutants around you, and pair with an app for additional smart data. The app can tell you when you should wear your mask, for example.
The mask was announced through Kickstarter. It’s made by a London, UK-based company. At the time of writing, Smart Cambridge Mask had raised about £19,000 of its £25,000 fundraising goal with about two weeks to go.
Overall, the Smart Cambridge Mask claims to be “the world’s first pollution mask that can actively monitor the air quality around you.” It also tells you when to change the mask filter.
The mask is marketed towards those who live in big, polluted cities, cyclists and motorcyclists, or anyone who’s worried about breathing polluted air.
One mask is priced at around £30. However, you can buy the mask without the “Smart Valve” for £18.
The London-based team behind the Smart Cambridge Mask launched the mask with the help of Y Combinator’s Fellowship Programme.
How Does the Smart Cambridge Mask Work?
The Smart Cambridge Mask filters particulate pollution like diesel emissions, gas pollution like petrol fumes, and pathogens like viruses and bacteria.
The reason the mask is “smart”, however, is because there’s a Bluetooth low energy chip embedded in the mask. This chip is connected to sensors in the mask, which helps you know when you should be wearing your mask, how often you need to replace your mask, and how much your mask is affecting your breathing.
You can wear the Smart Cambridge Mask as a normal mask without any smart features. You can remove the circular valve of the mask and replace it with the SmartValve to make it a “smart mask”. The valve quickly and easily clicks into place.
How Does the Smart Cambridge Mask App Work?
The app lets you monitor ambient air quality using data from government sources, weather agencies, and air quality monitoring platform AirVisual. Then, the app takes this data and checks your height, weight, age, and gender. Based on your lung capacity, breathing patterns, and data collected from the Smart Valve sensors, Smart Cambridge Mask can give you intelligent advice on when to wear the mask.

Who Created the Smart Cambridge Mask?
The Smart Cambridge Mask was created by a London, UK-based team. The company was founded by Christopher Dobbing, who was inspired to create the mask after visiting China and seeing extreme air pollution firsthand – especially the effect of that air pollution on children. Chris moved to China to work as an education consultant in 2012.
In 2015, the Cambridge Mask was born. Today, the company has offices in Cambridge, UK, Hong Kong, and Beijing.
