Clean Eating The Dirty Truth – BBC Documentary For Healthy Foods?

on

Many well-known faces that promote a wide range healthy or fad diets contribute towards what’s known as the Clean Movement. Some of the facets of the Clean Movement may include grain free, gluten free, vegan, alkaline-infused and other specific component-omitting diets. This has grown into a number of questions and debates in terms of its legitimacy.

Are these diets based on scientific research, studies, personal experiences or one’s fear of poor health?

Carbohydrates, meat, fruits and vegetables, and dairy once used to be praised by many cultures and cuisines, but some how, all has changed to the point where more and more consumers are avoiding specific intakes.

Clean Eating The Dirty Truth explores not only the legitimacy of the Clean Movement, but also how such a fad has grown to become what it is today.

What Is The Clean Eating The Dirty Truth Documentary?

More and more emphasis has been placed on eating whole and unprocessed foods, which does make sense, given that harmful chemicals were not used in anyway. However, trying to eliminate gluten, grains or meat from an entire diet may not be proven to bring enhanced health benefits.

Dr. Giles Yeo is a scientist who is also the presenter questioning the whereabouts of such diets in the Clean Eating The Dirty Truth. Throughout this documentary, he has come to the conclusion that the Clean Movement has been fuelled by personal and health experiences, arguments backed up by individuals who cannot provide sufficient proof and by illegitimate sources that do not have the authority to do so.

What are the Different Perspectives on Food Intakes and Other Fad Diets?

Throughout his journey in search for evidence, Dr. Giles Yeo came across a wide range of figures, some of which include Ella Mills, Dr William Davis, Dr Alessio Pasano, and T. Colin Campbell. His intentions of meeting with the Hemsley sisters and Natasha Corrett failed, as all three preferred to remain neutral on this matter.

The Clean Movement is like the telephone game, where one relies on the truth and evidence of another, which is then used to inform others. Where does it all start and when does it come to an end? What information was not factual-based that went from one person to the next? The following will depict exactly that:

Vegan or Plant Based Diet

Ella Mills is popularly known on instagram as “deliciously Ella”. She advocates plant-based nutrition and posts a wide range of pictures and recipes. Once having consumed all types of food, Ella had to find ways to mend with the fact that she cannot control her heart rate properly, and has a poor immune and digestive health. Hence, her decision towards changing her diet came about.

Gluten Free Diet

The Hemsley sisters are known to advocate the Gluten Free and Grains Free Diet. While they strongly believe that grains are not the crucial source of energy, it does not necessarily mean that they want others to avoid them. Unfortunately, they were not able to be part of this journey, but Dr Yeo managed to come across two figures who may have opposing beliefs on glutens and grains.

Gluten is a type of protein found in wheat, barley and others. Dr. Pasano further explains that gluten may breach one’s intestines by opening up cells. This, however, is not considered as a concern for the mass population, but rather for those who’ve experienced: “certain types of genes, leaking guts, faulty immune system and imbalanced gut microbes”.

He further argues that Dr William Davis’ perspective on grain free, carbohydrates free and gluten free diet and its ability to enhance one’s overall health and longevity is not completely true.

The Alkaline Diet

The Alkaline Diet or movement encourages consumers to choose fruits and vegetables that may alkalize one’s body. In other words, it claims to balance the pH levels of fluids of the body. This is when Dr Yeo meets Dr Robert O Young.

During the documentary, he went on to explain that red blood cells can turn into bacteria in sick people and how germs are merely an illusion. All of these arguments were not based on evidence or facts but rather as a unique thought.

The China Study

The last individual Dr Yeo discussed matters with was T.Colin Campbell, who came up with the China Study, a study that Ella Mills based most of her practices on.

Simply put, the China Study analyzes certain incidents of studies to better assess the correlation between diets and health. Campbell later went on to support plant-based protein. Unfortunately, the findings were not enough to arrive to conclusion that plant-based protein alone can heighten one’s health.

Clean Eating The Dirty Truth Review Summary

There are many things one can learn from the Clean Eating The Dirty Truth. Firstly, experiments done on rats and their results, neither equates nor is equivalent to what may arrive to humans.

Secondly, while some diets may achieve results, each and every individual’s systems work differently, hence the idea “one for all and all for one” does not apply to all. Lastly, not all studies are credited for legitimacy; therefore one cannot always rely on what’s out there.

Throughout the telephone game called the Clean Movement, analyzed by the documentary, Clean Eating- The Dirty Truth, it is proven that consumers may have been misinformed in a chain-like reaction filled with misconceptions.
