Biostrap – Advanced Health Wearable PPG Biometric Activity Tracker?

on

Biostrap claims to be the world’s most advanced wearable health platform. Find out how it works today in our Biostrap review.

What Is Biostrap?

Biostrap is a wearable health tracker that uses two devices to more accurately measure your biometric data.

As the company’s official website explains, “your body movements are too complex for just one activity tracking device.” That’s why many fitness trackers fail to accurately track your movements. Using two devices, the Biostrap platform can “help you understand your body and take your training to the next level.”

The fitness tracker can track gym activity, cycling, cardio, and swimming. One of the Biostrap devices fits on your wrist to track your heart rate, while the other clips onto your shoe and works as an accelerometer to track your movement.

How Does Biostrap Work?

Biostrap uses machine-learning algorithms to detect and analyze any repetitive activities you’re performing. You can get quantified information about your reps, duration of exercise, form, and consistency for every set.

The platform also offers automatic classification for cardio activities – including running, walking, swimming, elliptical, rowing, Stairmaster, and biking. All of these activities are classified automatically with no machine-learning required.

Users can also build their own custom exercise library. You can record any repetitive exercise once and Biostrap will automatically detect and analyze it for your future workouts. Using this system, Biostrap claims to be able to track hundreds of your favorite exercises.

Biostrap’s PPG Measurements

Biostrap uses photoplethysmography (PPG) to analyze your heart activity. Biostrap uses a clinical-grade PPG sensor that lets it gather precise heartbeat data. In fact, Biostrap claims to use the same technology used by your doctor (although the device manufacturer is careful to mention that their device should not be used to diagnose or treat medical conditions).

The PPG sensor can track all of the following information:

Overall, this gives you a “high definition heart rate”. In contrast, most wearables only use a basic PPG sensor that is hardly capable of capturing accurate heart rate data during moderate activity. They use binary signals, which means they only count beats that occur.

Biostrap’s PPG sensor works differently: instead of monitoring your pulse continuously, Biostrap monitors your pulse while you’re still, which lets it capture high-fidelity, raw PPG waveforms signifying your heart activity. These waveforms are the same technology used by your doctor to evaluate your heart health.

Overall, this makes Biostrap a clinical-grade heart rate sensor capable of gathering extremely precise heartbeat data. The platform captures over 2,000 heartbeats every 24 hours. Every heartbeat is analyzed for 29 different parameters, then analyzed against all of your other heartbeats from the last 24 hours.

The PPG sensor also tracks things you won’t find on other wearables – like blood oxygen saturation. This can be a very useful measurement for those who suffer from sleep apnea.

Biostrap Pricing

Biostrap is available online today for $249 USD.

Your purchase comes with a wrist-worn sensor, three different band colors, one shoe clip, one dual-coil induction charger, three wristbands, and a USB cable. The three colors include black, navy blue, and light gray.

All purchases come with a 30 day return policy – but only for trackers that are in new condition and in the original packaging.

The Biostrap App

Biostrap offers an app that works in a similar way to other fitness tracker apps. It features a clean, easy-to-read UI. You can use the app to optimize your workout, classify exercises, count reps, track duration, and measure consistency, for example.

To start, you can record your activities in the app with the tap of a button. However, cardio activities are recognized automatically.

You can open the app to track your heart rate throughout the day. You can see how your heart rate in the morning compared to your heart rate in the afternoon, for example. You can also visualize your health and activity levels at a glance.

Biostrap Review: What Do Customers Have to Say?

Biostrap is well reviewed online. However, it’s still a relatively new product that just launched earlier in 2017 – so we don’t have a lot of review data at this time. The device went through a small beta (with around 100 users) in spring 2017. Most reviews come from either Reddit’s /r/biostrap community or from the official Biostrap website. Here are some of the pros and cons of the Biostrap:

Pros

  • Provides more detailed and complex data than Fitbit and other fitness trackers
  • You can use it to see what every action has on your body – like how much drinking a cup of coffee will affect your heart rate
  • Accurate, medical-grade heart rate measurements
  • “A very powerful tool to enable you to live a healthier life”
  • Blood saturation monitoring, which is something not every fitness tracker offers
  • Minimalistic band
  • App is stable and easy to use

Cons

  • 2 to 4 days of battery life realistically, which is just average
  • You have to turn on the sleep feature manually (although the company might fix this in a future update)
  • Small bugs, like the tracker will occasionally miss an automatic workout

Many of these reviews were collected during beta testing for the Biostrap, which appeared to involve about 100 users. Obviously, there were still some issues being worked out. However, most users appear to have had a good experience with their Biostrap.
