Hepatitis C (HCV) is one of the traumatizing diseases that affect a large number of adults, especially those who have been overly exposed to the risk factors. It is basically a virus that infects the liver, causing inflammation. It can also lead to liver cirrhosis, cancer, liver failure, or even death if not carefully treated.
There are various categories of HCV, although the common classification is through genotypes 1, 2,3,4,5 & 6. There are also various drugs and medications offered for the treatment of HCV. Vosevi is one of them.
What Is VOSEVI?
As aforesaid, Vosevi is a drug offered for the treatment of Hepatitis C. This drug is specifically offered for all the genotypes (1-6) and comes in the form of a tablet (pill). It is a combination of three different active drugs or ingredients, including sofosbuvir, voxilaprevir, and velpatasvir. Voxilaprevir is a new drug offered for HCV while velpatasvir was formerly approved for the same.
This new combination is intended for treating patients whose initial Hepatitis C treatment was not successful. Vosevi is only usable on patients who do not have cirrhosis or those who are at a very early stage. The drug is taken once per day for a period of 12 weeks, after which the patient should show significant improvement towards recovery.
Benefits of Using Vosevi
Vosevi has shown great promise with regards to helping patients of Hepatitis C recover from the chronic disease. A great percentage of laboratory tests already indicate it as an effective alternative that can be used for chronic HCV.
Aside from patients with genotype 4 that gave a 91% success rate, other results showed an efficacy level of 95% and above. Some cases like genotype 1b, 5, and 6 indicated a 100% efficacy in treating HCV infections. This is because sofosbuvir, voxilaprevir, and velpatasvir are direct-acting antivirals that immediately attack and kill the HCV virus.
It is important to note that full recovery will require more time, especially since chronic infections leave the liver in bad shape. However, a full 12 week dose has been shown to help patients fight HCV infection and stop it altogether.
Tests have also indicated that Vosevi works the same way in men and women, different races, and different age groups. This eliminates the need for dose adjustment and such. There are various other minor benefits, including ease of administration (since it comes in tablet form taken with food).
Possible Side Effects
Vosevi has some potential side effects that both patients and physicians should be aware of. Laboratory tests have indicated that Vosevi increases the risk in patients who have had Hepatitis B infection as it can cause the virus to become active again. This is called reactivation and may happen during or shortly after treatment. Physicians must therefore comprehensively test for Hepatitis B antigens to ensure no reactivation will take place. If this is not done, previous Hepatitis B patients risk liver failure or even death if they use Vosevi.
Those suffering cirrhosis should also keep away from Vosevi, and so should pregnant and nursing mothers unless the potential benefits outweigh the impact on the fetus. Other than these concerns, a majority of the side effects of taking Vosevi include tiredness, headache, nausea, and diarrhea.
If you experience any symptoms or side effects following the use of Vosevi, contact your physician as soon as it occurs.
Top VOSEVI Products
There are several tablets and drugs available in the market for the treatment of HCV, and finding one should not be a daunting task. However, the risks involved are quit big and only approved products should be used under the supervision of qualified physicians. Vosevi is a combined class drug, which is one pill containing three different drugs including an inhibitor.
It is offered by Gilead Sciences with its three main active ingredients (sofosbuvir, voxilaprevir, and velpatasvir) and was approved by the FDA in July 2017. It also contains inactive ingredients like colloidal silicon dioxide, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, copovidone, microcrystalline cellulose, and croscarmellose sodium, among others found in the film that coats the tablet.
There may be other brands marketed under independent names like voxilaprevir. However, these are separate from Vosevi, which is a trademark tablet from Gilead Sciences.
Vosevi Review Summary
Vosevi is one of the HCV drugs that joined Mavyret as they are both approved for the treatment of Hepatitis C virus. Patients must undergo the necessary testing before they are deemed fit to use the drugs. Only experienced physicians should administer HCV treatments and drugs since the health situation of such chronic diseases is usually very delicate.
More importantly, only original genuine products from the manufacturers should be used for treating Hepatitis C patients. Patients under other medication or with a previous medical history should discuss all matters openly with their physicians to prevent any counteractions and aggravation of the condition.
