Tell is an iPhone app that helps you discover the best places to eat and drink in your local area. find out how Tell is different from its competition today in our review.
What Is Tell?
Tell is a food app similar to apps like Yelp: its goal is to help you find great places to eat or drink in your local area.
Obviously, this is a crowded market – so how does Tell plan to differentiate itself?
Tell’s major selling point is that you get recommendations from sources you trust. Instead of reading reviews from strangers on the internet, you get recommendations from people you know in real life.
Using Tell, you can filter dining results by user or tag. If you want to find the bars that your friend Dave likes, for example, then you can do that using the Tell app.
You don’t have to follow friends on Tell. You can follow Tell’s verified “tastemakers”, which include local newspapers, local restaurant reviewers, and travel guides like Lonely Planet.
Tell is careful to insist that its app features recommendations – not reviews. There are no rankings and no reviews from strangers in the app. You just give a restaurant a “Tell” to recommend it.
Tell Features
The over-arching goal of Tell app is to combine utility with your existing social networks, letting you search for cities or populate your homepage with recommendations from friends, tastemakers, and editorials you follow. Some of the key features of the app include:
- Profile support, letting you complete your profile and start saving, sharing, and connecting with friends
- Just like other social networks, you can build followers and have people follow you to keep track of your recommendations
- Recognize restaurants, cafes, or bars you like by giving them a “Tell”, which is a recommendation
- Filter results by user or tag, including filtering by the names of any of your friends, or filtering by certain types of foods and beverages (like pizza, tacos, breakfast, beers, or cocktails, for example)
- Follow verified “tastemakers” and discover their dining recommendations in a city. Some of the verified tastemakers already in the app include Lonely Planet, Michelin, and The New York Times, among others
Overall, Tell claims these features make their app the “best food map ever”.
