SmartPlate Review – Right For You?
SmartPlate calls itself the world’s first intelligent plate. It instantly analyzes everything you eat to help you make smarter, healthier eating choices. Here’s our SmartPlate review.
What is SmartPlate?
First we had smartphones. Then we had smart appliances. And now, we officially have smart plates. Thanks to SmartPlate, we have the world’s first intelligent plate that instantly analyzes everything you eat.
The SmartPlate has been featured on Shark Tank (the sharks didn’t like it) and other major media outlets. After selling out its initial pre-orders, SmartPlate will be shipping its second round of orders in Fall 2016.
By using the plate correctly, the manufacturer claims you can achieve your dietary goals more quickly, boost your athletic performance, and optimize your food intake. The makers of the plate have even claimed it could cure America’s obesity crisis: the plate tells you when you’re eating too fast, for example, using a display in the middle of the plate.
Let’s take a closer look at exactly how SmartPlate works.
How Does SmartPlate Work?
SmartPlate comes equipped with advanced object recognition sensors and weigh scales. These sensors let the device automatically identify, weigh, and analyze your food intake, giving you a complete picture of your eating habits.
After identifying and weighing the food, the plate will display a calorie total in the middle of the plate, giving you a constant reminder of how much energy you’re consuming with each meal.
If you start eating too fast, then that central display will also warn you to slow down.
Your SmartPlate can connect to any wireless device to instantly track your meals with no manual data entry required.
You can also use SmartPlate to set your pre and post workout requirements, helping to ensure you stick with your regimen.
And, if you accidentally (or purposely) over-served yourself on your plate, then SmartPlate will give you a Portion Patrol alert, helping you stay on track and achieve your weight loss goals.
The device connects via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to any iPhone or Android device. You can also integrate SmartPlate with MyFitnessPal and FitBit for maximum diet and exercise guidance.
In addition to the meal tracking, SmartPlate helps you maintain special diets by providing over 200 custom recipes and personalized meal plans that cater to different dietary needs. SmartPlate has diet plans categorized as Heart Healthy, Hypertension-friendly, and Diabetes-friendly, for example.
The plate itself has 10” or surface area, and the size of the plate is specially designed to prevent “portion distortion” and help you control your eating habits.
Oh, and SmartPlate is totally safe for the microwave, refrigerator, and dishwasher.
How to Use SmartPlate
Using SmartPlate is straightforward. You fill up your plate with food, then open the SmartPlate app on your mobile device.
Then, tap on the Snap option to open a camera inside the app. Take a picture of your plate and then submit it. The app will analyze the plate in a few seconds before giving you complete nutritional information for that meal.
Check out the trial video here, where a user takes a picture of their garden salad and instantly receives feedback about the contents of that salad. The Results page of the SmartPlate app tells you the calories, protein, carbs, sugar, fiber, fat, sodium, and total weight of the meal you’re about to eat. After you’ve added a meal, you’re encouraged to add it to your journal to keep track of your food over time.
SmartPlate Pricing
SmartPlate is priced at $119 for one SmartPlate with a lid.
That’s the preorder price for the shipments being sent out in Fall 2016. The makers of SmartPlate claim this is 20% off the normal retail price of $149.You can also save more money by ordering multiple plates at once. Here’s how pricing breaks down:
- 1 SmartPlate + Lid: $119
- 2 SmartPlates + Lid: $225
- 4 SmartPlates + Lid: $425
The plate is available in four different colors, including purple, green, pink, and blue.
Does SmartPlate Actually Work?
You may be thinking – I eat some pretty weird food sometimes. Can SmartPlate really provide accurate information about everything I eat on a daily basis?
SmartPlate is a remarkable identifiable achievement. The plate holds the title of the world’s first connected device that instantly tracks everything you eat by deploying advanced object recognition, weight sensors, and artificial intelligence. A patent is pending.
The makers of SmartPlate claim that it delivers up to 99.9% accuracy in as little as one second using “advanced food recognition algorithms.”
All SmartPlate weight sensors can measure up to 1500 grams (3 pounds) of food at one time, with no additional calculations necessary.
As you continue using SmartPlate, the device will learn more about your habits and will become “smarter, faster and more accurate over time.”
It’s also important to note that the SmartPlate can’t perform magic tricks: you can’t plunk a big burrito on top of the weigh scale and expect to receive a full nutritional profile of that burrito instantly. You’ll need to cut the burrito in half and point the cross section towards the camera.
Thus far, SmartPlate is only just hitting the market, so real customer reviews are hard-to-find. However, early reviews for prototype versions of SmartPlate were largely positive, with reviewers praising how accurate the plate could be at identifying different types of food – even subtle differences between the crusts of white and whole wheat bread.
Ultimately, the makers of SmartPlate have put a lot of effort into making sure the plate works as advertised to identify your food. It’s the core feature of the plate. So far, the plate has shown us that it easily fulfills that promise.

Should You Use SmartPlate to Help You Stay Healthy?
SmartPlate isn’t for everyone. Many of us have no need or desire for an intelligent, judgmental plate on our dinner table. But some people could use some extra dietary guidance. Some people welcome being told how many calories are on their plate, or how much protein they’ve consumed over the past 24 hours.
If you’re interested in keeping track of everything you eat, then SmartPlate can help you do that. At a price of $119, it’s probably the most expensive plate you’ll ever buy. But when it’s microwave-safe, dishwasher-safe, and refrigerator-safe, you’ll have no trouble using your SmartPlate for every meal of the day.
