Growing Roots: Organic Snacks That Support Urban Farming?

on

One of the most difficult things to do is acquire fresh and organic foods at an affordable price if you live in an urban setting. Most of the produce that you can purchase at your local food market is imported from areas across the U.S.

Because of the prices associated with renting retail locations and importing this produce the outcome is often super expensive products that not everyone can afford. Those who can’t afford these foods turn to buying the less costly alternative processed food to survive which can cause an unstable diet to form. We all know that the key to a healthy life is healthy nutrition so getting access to natural foods in the city is absolutely vital.

Fortunately at least one company is trying to make a difference. On March 6th, 2018, Unilever announced an effort to expand their urban farming efforts in the U.S. by launching Growing Roots, a plant-based food brand which is supporting urban farming every time a purchase is made.

About Growing Roots

Growing Roots was launched in NYC by Unilever, a company that owns many brands across the globe such as Hellmann’s, Lipton, Breyers, Klondike, and more. Growing Roots originally began as a social mission by the employees of the company who were excited about urban farming.

The belief of the people who started Growing Roots is that everyone should be able to access nutritious and affordable food. Unilever quickly noticed that urban farming has the potential to transform communities and decided to support it by creating the Growing Roots brand. T

hey joined forces with the New York's Building Healthy Communities initiative and Green City Force which resulted in the formation of 6 different urban farms that have already created over 32,000 pounds of produce. Unilever provided the funding for these farms and additionally, employees who work for the company also volunteer each year for thousands of hours in an effort to revolutionize urban farming.

Because of the positive impact that Growing Roots has generated in the city of New York, they have also decided to reach out to other cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, and Houston in an attempt to spark more urban farming efforts. The Growing Roots brand is designed to redirect 50% of its total profits to fund the urban farming initiative and thus ensure that urban farming becomes sustainable in various cities across the U.S.

Growing Roots Review Summary

The impact that urban farming has in any community is absolutely fantastic. It brings people together and best of all it offers nutritious, organic, and affordable produce. Backing up urban farming by creating a brand of organic products which are made from all-natural ingredients and dedicating 50% of the profits to ensure urban farming develops into a sustainable community across various cities in the U.S. is a formidable goal.

At this stage of Growing Roots life, it is hard to tell how beneficial this brand will actually become for the urban farming communities. Although Unilever has been backing them up for a few years, we aren’t sure how effective their Growing Roots brand will be at delivering the funding necessary to continue the urban farming community growth in other major cities.

One thing is certain, the products which will be soon available from Growing Roots are certainly top of the line. Yes, they contain a few additives here and there, but at the core of each snack are organic ingredients which provide nutritional benefits and a tasty alternative to some of the other junk we often turn towards.

The price per each 4oz bag is estimated to be retailed at $3.99. Taking into account the use of organic ingredients and the fact that half the proceeds will be going towards funding urban farming, this is actually a very formidable price point.
