AbsorbPlate Review – Should You Use It?
AbsorbPlate is a new dinner plate that promises to cut 30 calories from every meal by absorbing excess calories and grease. Here’s our AbsorbPlate review.
What is AbsorbPlate?
AbsorbPlate is a dinner plate that reduces the number of calories in your food by absorbing grease. At first glance, the plate just looks like a normal decorative plate. But if you take a closer look, you’ll see 500 holes designed to lock in grease and oil, stealing it away from your food and making your dish a little bit healthier – kind of like what happens when you “blot” a pizza with a napkin.
The plate has been described as “ingenious” with reviewers claiming that it “literally sucks calories out of your meal” so you can enjoy greasy food without the guilt.
AbsorbPlate was created by an advertising agency named BBDO Bangkok, who teamed up with the Thai Health Promotion foundation to bring the plate to market. The plate is particularly effective at reducing calories in Thai cuisine, where stir-fry and deep-dry dishes are particularly popular. Thailand has the second-highest obesity rate in Southeast Asia, which has left health authorities scrambling for a solution.
AbsorbPlate may be that solution. But its appeal extends throughout more than just Southeast Asia: it could be the next big dieting tool in the western world.

That video also explains a case study for the plate and a basic overview of the technology behind it.
Unfortunately, the plate is not yet available for sale to the general public. Right now, it’s just a glimmer in the eye of a marketing company in Thailand. But it could be available in the near future. At the very least, the company has made several prototype plates and proven that it reduces calories in food – so we know it works.

How Does AbsorbPlate Work?
AbsorbPlate works kind of like the surface of a sponge. The plate contains 500 holes that suck up oil and grease from your meal. On an average dish, it can soak up about 7mL of oil, which works out to about 30 calories.
You know how you dab a napkin on your slice of pizza to make it “healthier”? Think of the AbsorbPlate like a high-tech version of that. It doesn’t make unhealthy food instantly healthy, but it makes it a little healthier so you can feel better about the foods you’re eating while also reducing calorie consumption.
The holes are laid out in a snowflake formation on the plate. After the holes soak up the oil and grease, you can easily wash them out in any dishwasher or sink. The grease doesn’t actually sink into the plate or soak it up – it just sits in the holes until you wash it out, so it doesn’t get stuck to your food or soaked into the rest of your dish.
Ultimately, the AbsorbPlate is only in the concept phase right now but could be coming to a diet program near you in the future. For now, it only exists in prototype form at a marketing agency in Bangkok.
