Juicero Review – Should You Buy?
Juicero wants to be the Keurig of juice-making. But is it actually worth the high price tag? Let’s take a look today in our Juicero review.
What is Juicero?
Juicero is a startup company that recently introduced its high-tech juice press to the market.
Priced at $699, Juicero is a smart juicer that can connect to your Wi-Fi. Just like Keurig did for coffee, Juicero wants to do for juice. Anytime you want some juice, the Juicero will cold-press proprietary packages of fruits and vegetables to create convenient, single-use servings.
You can also control Juicero through its own mobile app.
There’s one big catch when buying Juicero: you’ll need to subscribe to the company’s package delivery system. You need to sign up for a minimum of five packs (called a bundle) every week. Each pack is priced between $7 and $10. If you run the numbers, that means you’re spending $140 to $200 per month on Juicero, or $1680 to $2400 per year (plus the initial $699 fee).
Juicero clearly isn’t for those on a tight budget.
Nevertheless, Juicero has already attracted the attention of investors. To date, the startup company has raised $70 million in series B funding.
Juicero is currently only available in California, although the company is preparing to expand nationwide.
Juicero Features
-Juice packs come in five flavors, including Sweet Greens, Greens, Spicy Greens, Carrot Beet, and Sweet Roots
-The makers of Juicero claim all of the ingredients are farm-fresh and organic
-The juice packs stay fresh in your fridge for 6 days
-No need to add water
-All juice packs come with QR codes and the juice press scans each code to “ensure freshness”
-Juicero connects to your in-home Wi-Fi network and is accessible over the mobile app
That QR code thing is a bit misleading: the company claims that the QR code scanning is done to ensure freshness. In reality, there are other reasons. It’s similar to the Keurig system, where packs with unauthorized QR codes cannot be used with the juicer – so a company can’t start making their own packs and undercut the high price of Juicero’s packs.
Juicero Packs
Obviously, the packs are the most important part of this juicer. So what’s the story behind them? Juicero claims to source its fruits and vegetables from certified organic farms. The fruits and vegetables are triple washed then chilled to optimize freshness.
Then, the fruits and vegetables are chopped in different ways: “We tailor our chop for each type of produce to ensure maximum juice yield,” the company describes.
The chopped fruits are then placed into a sealed plastic package before being mailed to Juicero subscribers.
Here are the types of juice you can buy with Juicero:
-Sweet Greens ($7 Per Serving): Contains organic apple, organic spinach, organic pineapple, organic kale, and organic lemon.
-Greens ($7 Per Serving): Contains organic spinach, organic celery, organic romaine, organic kale, organic lemon, and organic cucumber.
-Spicy Greens ($7 Per Serving): Contains organic pineapple, organic romaine, organic celery, organic spinach, organic parsley, organic jalapeno, and organic lemon.
-Carrot Beet ($5 Per Serving): Contains organic carrot, organic beet, organic orange, organic lemon, and organic apple.
-Sweet Roots ($6 Per Serving): Contains organic carrot, organic apple, organic beet, organic spinach, organic lemon, organic celery, and organic ginger.
The company claims to be preparing more juices for release in the future.
The Juicero Package
The Juicero package is a key part of the experience. The package has a shelf life of 6 days inside your refrigerator.
A key part of the technology is the Breatheway Patch, which keeps your produce fresh until you’re ready to juice. Once you’re ready to juice, you place the whole package inside the Juicero press (there are “registration hooks” inside the press).
Juicero Pricing
Juicero is priced at $699 USD for the juicer.
In order to buy the juicer, you’ll also need to subscribe to a minimum of five Juicero packs per week. Packs are priced between $5 and $7.
Each pack of 5 juices is called a bundle. On your Juicero subscription screen, you can change the combination of juices you receive, the number of bundles you want delivered each week, and the exact days you’d like them delivered. Bundles are shipped weekly.
You can also pause or cancel your subscription at any time.
Juicero App
Juicero may be your first kitchen appliance that has its own app. The app connects to your Juicero press and enhances the juicing experience by explaining the benefits of the juice you’re drinking as well as where each ingredient comes from.
The Juicero app is currently in development but is preparing for release on Android and iOS devices. Some of the app’s features include:
-The Juicero press will read each pack’s QR code to ensure it’s ready for juicing, and will send you a notification if your packs are approaching their expiration date
-The app explains the organic farms where your fruits and vegetables came from
-Nutritional information for your current juice
-Track your juicing activity over time
-Customize pack deliveries
About Juicero
Juicero was founded on the idea that most Americans do not get their daily recommended intake of fruits and vegetables. Juicero is “on a mission to help people consume more fresh produce every day”, according to the company’s About Us page: Juicero.com/about/
The company was founded by Doug Evans, entrepreneur and former CEO of Organic Avenue. He built the first Juicero press in his kitchen in 2013.
Currently, Juicero is only available in California but will likely be rolling out across the nation in the near future.
