Veggemo – Non-Dairy Pea Protein, Tapioca & Potato Milk Beverages?

on

Veggemo claims to be the world’s first non-dairy beverage made from veggies. Find out everything you need to know about this so-called “veggie milk” today.

What Is Veggemo?

Veggemo is a new beverage product that aims to replicate the flavor and consistency of milk using vegetables instead of dairy products. Today, there are three core Veggemo products available, including the Original, Unsweetened, and Vanilla varieties. All of them are classified as veggie-based non-dairy beverages.

Just like ordinary milk, you can drink Veggemo straight, or use it to make various milk-based recipes. The official Veggemo website features recipes for chowder, for example.

Today, you can also find Veggemo being sampled in stores across America. The milk has been available in Canada for several months, but just launched in the United States in February 2017. You can order it on Amazon and from conventional retailers, where it’s typically sold between $3 and $4 for a one liter jug.

Veggemo is made by a Richmond, British Columbia-based company named Global Gardens Group Inc.

What’s In Veggemo?

How do you make a milk-like beverage without actually using any milk products? The makers of Veggemo use pea protein, tapioca, and potato to make the beverage. The three ingredients are blended together to give the beverage different qualities. Here’s what you need to know about the ingredients:

  • Peas: Peas provide protein, nutrition, and flavor.
  • Tapioca: The tapioca in Veggemo is sourced from cassava and has been added to Veggemo to give the beverage a creamy texture.
  • Potatoes: Potatoes make Veggemo smooth and milky-white, just like ordinary milk.

As the makers of Veggemo explain, “you’d never guess Veggemo was made with vegetables”. They claim that the beverage doesn’t taste or look like vegetables. It also doesn’t really taste like milk – but it does have the creaminess of 2% dairy milk.

Other key traits of Veggemo include the fact that it’s rich in calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12.

Veggemo Features

Veggemo is an ideal choice for vegans who still want to enjoy cereal, milk-based recipes, and other foods. Some of the key features of Veggemo include:

  • Dairy free
  • Gluten free
  • Soy free
  • Non-GMO
  • Cholesterol free
  • Vegan-friendly
  • Kosher

The makers of Veggemo claim that their beverage can reduce your risk of heart disease. Drinking a beverage like Veggemo can help lower your cholesterol, reduce high blood pressure, and avoid type 2 diabetes.

Another advantage is that Veggemo doesn’t force you to miss out on the high protein content of milk. Today, manufacturers are getting better and better at extracting protein from vegetable sources – including quinoa, peas, nuts, chickpeas, beans, tofu, and more. Veggemo gets its protein content from pea protein.

What makes peas such an attractive source? The makers of Veggemo claim that peas are extremely nutritious an easily digestible. They’re also gluten-free and have no lactose or soy. Additionally, they have few allergens. The peas used in Veggemo are sourced, grown, and naturally processed in Belgium.

Veggemo Products

There are currently three core Veggemo products, including each of the following:

Original

This is the original Veggemo recipe. It’s described as flavorful and delicious, with a similar smoothness and creaminess to 2% dairy milk.

Unsweetened

The Unsweetened version of Veggemo is made without sugar. It uses the same proprietary Veggemo formula made with pea protein, tapioca, and potato.

Vanilla

The Vanilla version of Veggemo uses a blend of three different vanillas to give the beverage a rich, smooth flavor.

Veggemo Ingredients

What exactly is in Veggemo? Obviously, you can’t mash together potatoes, pea protein, and tapioca starch together to make a delicious-tasting beverage. So here’s the full list of ingredients:

Filtered water, proprietary vegetable blend (pea protein, tapioca starch, potato starch, protease, amylase), organic cane sugar, maltodextrin (from tapioca), sunflower oil, tricalcium phosphate, natural flavours, sea salt, gellan gum, xanthan gum, vitamin A palmitate, vitamin D2, riboflavin, folic acid, vitamin B12

The ingredients list and nutritional information is fully available from the Veggemo website. The manufacturer is transparent about what goes into the beverage, and you don’t have to look far to find the specific list of ingredients.

The ingredients list is slightly different between the three blends, but the base formula is the same (it always consists of filtered water and the proprietary vegetable blend).
