Sitting at a desk all day for extended periods of time, puts immense pressure on your upper and lower back, shoulders and neck, and through your hips, downward. Having the right desk chair can be a saving grace to many medical problems associated with sitting for extended periods of time at a desk for work, or at a computer for example. The Sit Fit chair, is a balance chair that provides ergonomic support for a stronger back, healthier posture, spinal alignment and core strengthening.
Scary Facts About Sitting
Sitting increases risk of death up to 40%! Sounds crazy – but sitting 6 or more hours every day makes you 40% more likely to die in the next 15 years than someone who sits less than 3 hours a day. The only way to improve this scary statistic is to stop sitting. Studies also show that obese people sit approximately 2.5 more hours a day than that of a thinner person. Between the years 1980 and 2000, exercise rates stayed the same, sitting time increased 8% and obesity double, coincidence? How Does Sitting Affect Your Body?
As soon as you sit, the following happens;
- Electrical activity in the leg muscles shuts off
- Calorie burning drops to one per minute
- Enzymes that help break down fat drop 90%
After 2 hours, the following happens;
- Good cholesterol drops 20%
After 24 hours, the following happens;
- Insulin effectiveness drops 24% and the risk of diabetes rises
The Idea Behind Sit Fit
This project was conceptualized one day that the inventor was walking through the office in Minnesota, when he observed a coworker slouched over in his chair. He thought he looked uncomfortable and definitely not engaged. Another coworker was sitting on a yoga ball, however he noted his posture was terrible and equally as engaged (or lack thereof) as the previous coworker. Although studies suggest the yoga ball being a great option, keep in mind that it is not height adjustable and as a result making it a nightmare for some people.
Sit Fit: It's All in the Design!
Comfortable, physically engaging and ergonomic were the priorities.
To keep the body and mind from falling asleep, the designers found that the further the pivotal point was from the floor, the more effective it would be, which prompted this to be designed directly under the seat. Allowing for a full 360 degree wobble creates instability which engages the core, activates your mind, encourages your body to fidget and promote perfect posture. Alongside a great core workout we should add.
The seat, described as a tractor seat, follows the contour of your seat, which allows for full core engagement as opposed to sitting on a flat seat or round ball, like the yoga ball. A pneumatic left was also incorporated to accommodate young school children to grown adults.
“Zero5 Innovations has been manufacturing high quality products since 2005. We've made it a priority from the very beginning to involve our partner manufacturers and vendors in every step of the design process, catching issues before they have a chance to become problems. Members of our team include design engineers, mechanical engineers and manufacturing engineers.”
The Sit Fit project is anticipated to be completed in December 2016 and with enough “backing of the project” it is expected to retails as early as January 2017. An advantage of backing the project is you will save money off the expected retail of $299.00 once it launches, and you also are able to pick the color of your Sit, Fit.
This chair is the answer and I want one! I wrote to Zero5 Innovations and they said they will re-launch on KickStarter late in Feb.
