Bitome is a wearable device manufacturer best-known for its wearable hydration monitors. Learn more about Bitome today in our review.
What is Bitome?
Bitome is a biotech company that makes wearable products for athletes. The company is best-known for making hydration monitoring tools that measure water levels in your body non-invasively and in real-time.
The company’s first product measures hydration using a sensor that primarily lookis at intravascular fluid to determine overall volume status of the body. That product is currently undergoing testing with endurance athletes in the Boston area. The company does not yet have a product available to the consumer market, and they have not yet given a name to their hydration sensor.
Tracking hydration might seem straightforward. However, it’s surprisingly difficult to track hydration in a non-invasive way.
That’s a problem. Bitome’s official website claims that there are over 500,000 hospitalizations in the United States every year due to dehydration, but there’s no way to reliably measure dehydration without advanced medical equipment. Thanks to Bitome, people in dehydration-prone professions – like firefighting or professional sports – can wear a hydration monitor.
If hydrations dips to a dangerous level, they can take action – like take a break, grab a drink of water, or cool down for the day. In other words, Bitome’s hydration sensor is a product that could potentially save lives.
How Does Bitome Hydration Sensor Work?
Bitome’s hydration sensor works in a straightforward way. You wear the device by attaching it to your skin. Then, you download an app for your mobile device or desktop.
The company’s software crunches the numbers, then gives you a summary of your hydration levels.
The sensors specifically use magnetic resonance to non-invasively inspect the water content inside your body.
These sensors are placed against your skin using the wearable, then “peek” inside your body to view water content. The wearable takes several hundred measurements over the course of a day.
Bitome claims their system is equally effective whether you’re sitting at a desk or exercising.
Your data is analyzed to build a custom hydration profile. The app will send you push notifications to alert when you’ve deviated from your standard hydration level, or when you need to take action.
About Bitome
Bitome was created by co-founders Herb Ryan (CEO), Jens Höfflin (CTO), and Trevor Kemp PhD (COO). Together, the trio knew there could be a better way to track hydration in a safe, non-invasive, patient-friendly way.
The company was founded in 2016. They’re based in Boston. Their first prototype was a bench top system. They miniaturized that system and eventually incorporated it into a wearable device.
Bitome was picked as one of the 30 most innovative startups in Boston by the MIT Enterprise Forum. The company was also accepted into multiple accelerators, including BOOMTOWN, ABQid, and HAX.
In November 2016, the company launched a private beta with Boston-area endurance athletes. At the time of writing, that beta was still ongoing. Bitome may release their hydration tracker to the consumer market in 2017. However, few details have been released about the sensor or its upcoming release date and pricing.
You can get in touch with the company by email at [email protected]. The company’s official website claims that they’re “working frantically to get this product to market”.
