Sensoria Fitness Socks and Anklet is a pair of socks with an electronic anklet. Priced at $200, Sensoria’s kit is more than you would normally pay for a pair of socks. Is it worth the price? Find out in our review.
What Are Sensoria Fitness Socks?
Sensoria Fitness Socks are “smart socks” made from high-tech runner-friendly fabric. The socks come with a magnetic anklet that magnetically snaps to the cuff of the sock.
You wear the socks and the anklet while exercising to get smart feedback from your workouts. That feedback is delivered through a dedicated mobile application that tracks you as you run.
Sensoria Fitness Socks track all of the usual fitness information, including the distance traveled and your calories burned.
However, they’re also able to track things that other fitness trackers cannot – like how your feet hit the ground while running, or your cadence while you run.
The socks are sold online today through SensoriaFitness.com, where they’re priced at $199 for the pair of socks with the anklet. That price also includes one anklet charger.
How Do Sensoria Fitness Socks Work?
The socks may look like ordinary socks at first glance, but they’re actually infused with proprietary 100% textile sensors. These sensors are paired with the anklet, which has a Bluetooth receiver in it.
Together, this technology allows the socks to accurately count steps, track speed, measure the number of calories you’ve burned, and track your altitude or distance.
Of course, these are all things you can get from an ordinary fitness tracker. That’s why Sensoria Fitness Socks have added additional tracking support, including the ability to track your cadence and foot landing technique as you walk and run.
Ultimately, Sensoria claims their socks can be used to identify injury-prone running styles. You can track your cadence and foot movements to correct poor form, for example. You can avoid heel striking or ball striking when you run to reduce your risk of injuries.
All of this information is delivered via the Sensoria mobile app, which coaches runners in real time using audio cues.
From the Sensoria dashboard, you can also get help achieving your goals, improving your performance, and reducing your risk of gravitating back to bad tendencies.
Since Sensoria Fitness Socks rely on Bluetooth, you’re going to need a phone with Bluetooth connectivity. Most phones sold within the last 5 or 6 years have this connectivity. The Sensoria Fitness App is available for iOS 8 and above devices and Android 4.3 and above devices.
Sensoria Fitness Socks and Anklet Pricing
The Sensoria Fitness Socks and Anklet are available online through SensoriaFitness.com, where they come in three different sizes: Adult MD, Adult LG, and Adult XL.
Regardless of your size, the socks are always priced the same: they’re priced at $199 USD. Shipping will be added at checkout.
About Sensoria
Sensoria is an American fitness tracking company that describes its products as “artificial intelligence sportswear”.
The company is well-known for its Heart Sentinel technology, which lets you track your heart rate while running. It also alerts you of when you may be at risk for a cardiac event – like a heart attack. The Sensoria Heart Rate Monitor (HRM) comes attached to Sensoria athletic shirts. There’s a band across the chest of these shirts, allowing the sensor to fit snugly again you as you run.
Sensoria calls these products its “Smart Upper Garments”. The socks, meanwhile, are the second part of the system and can help you improve the “lower half” of your running routine.
Additionally, you have the Sensoria Fitness App, which provides basic functionality for free. However, you can also pay a subscription fee to receive full access to various training programs. That app comes with a three month free trial.
Sensoria was created by co-founders Davide Vigano (CEO and co-founder), Maurizio Macagno (CTO and co-founder), and Mario Esposito. Davide is a former Microsoft executive while Maurizio is a former software professional. The Sensoria lineup was created by Mario Esposito, who has an 18 year track record as an innovator.
Like many health and wellness companies available today, Sensoria also has a medical board of advisors, including multiple podiatric specialists and sports medicine physicians.
The company is based in Redmond, Washington. You can get in touch by emailing [email protected].
What Do Customers Have to Say About Sensoria Fitness Socks?
Sensoria Fitness Socks were first launched in 2015. Several major tech blogs have posted reviews of the socks online. CNET, Digital Trends, and Mac World reviews can all be found online.
CNET gave the socks an editors’ rating of 2.5 socks out of 5, saying that they’re “good-idea smart socks that stumble right out of the gait” (yes, they intended to spell gait that way).
Digital Trends was more positive towards Sensoria, giving the socks a DT Editors’ Rating of 4 stars out of 5.
MacWorld echoed many of the same complains as CNET, giving the socks a rating of 2.5 out of 5 (to put that score in perspective, they’ve also given devices like the Fitbit Aria and Apple Watch 3.5 stars out of 5).
Overall, the reviews for the socks were generally positive. The main “con” across all reviews was the fact that most people are unwilling to pay $200 for a pair of socks.
In any case, here are some of the pros and cons we’ve noticed across all of these reviews:
Pros
- Textile sensors within the socks do a good job of capturing specialized running data, including more data than you could get from any fitness tracker
- Socks are cushioned and comfortable
- Socks are machine washable and anti-bacterial
- Companion app works well on iOS and Android, and is described as “clear and simple to use”
- Virtual coach is available
- Anklet is lightweight, comfortable to wear, and doesn’t distract you while running
- Helpful visualization that shows exactly where your feet are striking the ground, detecting how you run and what you can do to fix your form
Cons
- It’s a high price to pay for a pair of socks
- Running data “begs to be presented in a more sophisticated way”, explains the CNET review
- No smart running programs or plans are included (although you can subscribe to the Sensoria app, which comes with a 3 month free trial)
- No Strava connection
- Sock material can make your feet hot
- You can only see data on one foot at a time, unless you want to buy two anklets
- “Voice coaching can be annoying”, explains the MacWorld review
Again, aside from minor complaints about the UI, most reviews are generally positive. The primary con is the price tag.
Sensoria Fitness Socks Review Summary
Most socks don’t cost $200 per pair. Most socks, however, don’t come with “smart” technology like a Bluetooth anklet, sensor-infused fabric, and a virtual coach.
If you don’t mind the high price tag, then the Sensoria Fitness Socks appear to work as advertised to help you track your cadence, feet striking, and other crucial things about running. You also get access to much of the same data you would get in a conventional fitness tracker.
Most people won’t want to pay $200 for a pair of socks. If you want to know as much data about your running as possible, however, then the Sensoria Fitness Socks may be the right choice for you.
