Benefits Of Nicotinamide Riboside

New Research Shows Nicotinamide Riboside Can Improve Brain Performance and Reduce Aging

If you’re like most people, you’ve never heard of nicotinamide riboside (NR) before. But that may change very soon.

Nicotinamide riboside is the darling of the nootropic community this week after Harvard researchers published a report which suggests the unique chemical compound not only makes us smarter – it also makes us look younger.

This recent study involved researchers at Harvard University and the University of NSW. Published in the scientific journal Cell in December 2013, the landmark study provided valuable insights into brain performance and anti-aging.

Today, I’m going to explain what nicotinamide riboside is, how it works, and why it could be the most valuable nootropic supplement you ever use:

What is Nicotinamide Riboside?

Nicotinamide riboside is naturally produced in our bodies. It’s a chemical compound which acts as a precursor to vitamin B3. In chemistry terms, it’s a pyridine-nucleoside – but you don’t really need to know that.

For a long time, nobody really knew about nicotinamide riboside. Its mechanisms were not well-understood and, at first glance, it didn’t look like it profoundly affected the body in any way.

Over the past year, a number of studies have been performed on nicotinamide riboside, radically changing the way we feel about this chemical compound.
What are the suggested benefits of nicotinamide riboside?

Nicotinamide riboside has been linked to a number of surprising and powerful benefits. Early research on the chemical has been noteworthy, to say the least. Here are some of the suggested benefits of nicotinamide riboside according to early research:

Promotes Mitochondrial Biogenesis To Turn Back The Effects Of Aging

One recent nicotinamide riboside study concluded that taking nicotinamide riboside as an oral supplement, “resulted in a remarkable induction of mitochondrial biogenesis and oxidative metabolism, with an increase in mitochondrial mass.”

Once you skip past all the science-y stuff, what does that actually mean? Well, mitochondria is directly linked to aging. As our bodies age, our mitochondrial production – and functionality – declines. This leads to a wide range of degenerative diseases and ultimately makes us look and feel older.

By promoting mitochondrial biogenesis, nicotinamide riboside may be able to “kickstart” the body’s anti-aging processes in a way that no other chemical compound can. That means you look, feel, and think younger.

Nicotinamide Riboside Anti Aging

Synthetizes NAD+ to promote anti-aging processes.

NAD+ is nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. NAD+ isn’t quite as new as nicotinamide riboside (NR), but it has been linked to similar benefits.

Scientists have long used NAD+ as a powerful anti-aging tool. While trying to find a cure for aging, scientists increased the levels of NAD+ within the mitochondria. The mitochondria responded by increasing their performance and energy, which effectively neutralizes the effects of aging.

Now, why am I telling you about NAD+ when I should be talking about nicotinamide riboside? Well, scientists currently make NAD+ using a complicated, 8 step biological process. It’s inefficient and expensive.

Nicotinamide riboside is a precursor to NAD+ and could be the world’s best way to synthetize NAD+ within our bodies. Instead of using an 8 step process to create NAD+, scientists could use nicotinamide riboside to make it a 2 step process, making the anti-aging process significantly more efficient.
Delay disease progression

This benefit is extremely exciting. Researchers recently published a report in EMBO Molecular Medicine which showed that NR supplementation delayed disease progression in mice during testing.

Specifically, nicotinamide riboside “effectively delayed early- and late-stage disease progression, by robustly inducing mitochondrial biogenesis in skeletal muscle and brown adipose tissue, preventing mitochondrial ultrastructure abnormalities and [mitochondrial DNA] deletion formation.”

Researchers went on to state that “NR further stimulated mitochondrial unfolded protein response, suggesting its protective role in mitochondrial disease.”

The results are compelling. Could nicotinamide riboside be the super-powered disease cure humanity has been searching for?

Is Nicotinamide Riboside The Cure For Aging?

Ultimately, nicotinamide riboside is so exciting because it could be the first step towards finding a cure for aging. You know how some people believe the first person who will live to 150 years old has already been born?

That’s because of compounds like nicotinamide riboside. How cool is that?

What Is Niagen And How Is It Different From Nicotinamide Riboside?

All of this nicotinamide riboside research prompted pharmaceutical companies to begin developing their own nicotinamide riboside supplements.

One company called ChromaDex was the first on the scene. ChromaDex manufactures NIAGEN, which promises to be the “first and only commercially available form of nicotinamide riboside (NR)”.

ChromaDex also manufactures NAD+, an essential metabolite used in all human cells. NAD+ is similar to nicotinamide riboside in chemical structure. As mentioned above, the NAD stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide.

Ultimately, ChromaDex has accumulated the intellectual property surrounding nicotinamide riboside for the last few years. They entered the market early, before anyone else recognized the benefits of nicotinamide riboside, and they may be the ones who profit most from its commercialization.

Niagen delivers 250mg of nicotinamide riboside per serving. It promises to be a safe supplement for athletes and “hard-trainers” everywhere. Although it’s designed for high-level athletes, its mind and body-boosting benefits can be enjoyed by just about anyone.

Niagen Ingredients And Usage Instructions

Niagen’s ingredients include 250mg of nicotinamide riboside along with microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, and cellulose in the form of the vegetarian capsule.

Users are instructed to take two capsules daily upon waking or immediately prior to consuming their first meal.

Is Nicotinamide Riboside The Right Choice For You?

Nicotinamide riboside is one of the most exciting new chemicals being researched by the nootropic community today.

It’s exciting because it’s one of the first supplements that literally turns back the effects of aging by revitalizing the mitochondria – also known as the “powerhouses” of our cells and one of the most critical parts of organic life.

That means better cognitive performance, better athletic performance, and a more youthful appearance. Those are benefits everyone can appreciate.

  1. Hmmm

How does Nicotinamide Riboside with its ridiculously high prices compare to plain old fashiond (and very cheap) high dose Vitamin B3. B3 of course having been used safely even at high dosages for a very long time. It also has the benefit of a long list of human research and studies. What it doesn’t have is a patent and corresponding license to rip off consumers…..Which goes a long way toward explaining why that the dozens of websites and articles hyping these patented forms of B3 never actually compare their results to appropriate doses of B3. If these new patents forms demonstrated any real world advantages to consumers we would have seen them plastered all over the net along with the rest of the hype. Obviously the lack of such comparisons strongly suggests that plain old fashioned high dose B3 works just fine.

If you work up to the larger doses of B3 slowly. Making sure to take them with food your body tends to adjust over time and the flushing becomes greatly diminished and often disappears. The flushing being the only real knock on B3.

  2. I have to try this. Going to try it in a cream compound form with other ingredients such as curcumin, ginger, astragalus etc. to rub on the skin. I already use this cream without NR, with great success!
