Liver Detox

Liver Detox Cleanse Review

Everything You Need to Know About Doing a Liver Detox.

If you’ve ever come back from a long vacation, then you’ve probably felt the need to do a liver detox. Maybe you drank too many cervezas on the beach in Mexico. Or maybe you overindulged on junk food in Las Vegas.

Wherever your vacation took you, a Liver Detox is supposed to help you feel refreshed and rejuvenated.

What is a Liver Detox?

A Liver Detox involves flushing unwanted toxins from the body. As you probably already know, your liver has a number of critical roles that support all corners of your body.

By consuming certain foods and drinks, you may be able to reduce toxic overload on your body and flush toxins away. This can improve your overall health and wellness while also inhibiting toxic buildup.

Why Do I Need a Liver Detox?

Your liver is the body’s largest internal organ – so it makes sense that it plays a lot of different roles. It helps with weight loss, for example, and is integral to virtually all metabolic processes. From the digestive system to blood sugar to fat storage, your liver is incredibly important.

In women, the liver even helps to regulate menstrual cycles. It also produces more proteins than any other organ in the body and is responsible for mobilizing energy.

The liver’s most important function, however, is breaking down everything that enters your body – from healthy, organic fruits and vegetables to poisonous alcohol. Everything you consume gets processed through your liver.

Think of all the stuff you eat and drink on a regular basis. Your liver has to handle all of that. When your liver gets overwhelmed, it can become clogged with nutrients. This makes it less effective at filtering fat and toxins from your bloodstream.

As your body becomes more and more toxic, it can become more and more difficult to lose weight and keep it off.

During a liver cleanse, you eat specific foods and drinks that fight back against this toxic buildup. Instead of putting a strain on your liver, these foods and drinks pass through with minimal stress, which means your liver has time to properly cleanse toxins from the body. During a liver detox, your liver can break down fat more efficiently and push toxins through – and out of – the body.

Who Should Do a Liver Detox?

You should always talk to your doctor prior to undergoing a liver detox or any type of cleanse. However, certain groups of people are more vulnerable to liver problems than others.

If any of the following characteristics describe you, then you may particularly benefit from a liver detox:

— Excessive Consumption Of Diet Soft Drinks Or Artificial Sweeteners Like Aspartame

— History Of Alcohol Or Drug Use (including Both Illegal Drugs And Prescription Drugs)

— History Of Hepatitis Or Other Viral Infections

— Sensitivity To Chemicals Like Tobacco Smoke, Vehicle Exhaust, Cleaning Agents, Or Perfumes

— Pain Between The Shoulder Blades

— Light Or Pale Colored Stools, Or Shiny And Greasy Stools

— Upset Stomach Or Indigestion From Greasy Foods

— Frequent Nausea, Motion Sickness, Or Morning Sickness

— Headache Over The Eyes

— Pain Under The Right Side Of The Rib Cage

— Gallbladder Attacks

— A Gross Or Bitter Taste In Your Mouth (especially After Eating)

— Easily Hungover

— Chronic Fatigue Or Tiredness

The Body’s Natural Detox System

Your body has a natural detox system that should cleanse toxins from the body on its own.

That detox system includes three parts:

— Liver
— Colon
— Kidneys

Unfortunately, these three organs are often overwhelmed by toxins or simply need a break from cleansing. In that case, you may need a cleanse or detox.

The important thing to remember is that your liver works synergistically with your colon and your kidneys: so if you’re thinking about doing a cleanse, you should aim on cleansing your liver, colon, and kidneys all at the same time (although most of the tips listed blow will naturally do that).

Typically, the cleanses that are good for your kidneys are also good for your liver (and vice versa). Cleansing your colon typically involves adding a fiber supplement to your liver detox.

How to Do a Liver Detox

So how exactly does a liver detox work?

Here are some of the general rules followed during a liver detox:

Eat More Fruits

Processed sugars are bad for the liver. Natural sugars, however, aren’t quite as bad. Fruits are also rich with vitamins and minerals and are a critical part of the first phase of liver detoxification. Many liver detox diets recommend eating fruits high in vitamin C to provide maximum antioxidant protection. Oranges, orange juice, kiwis, papaya, pineapple, and berries are all popular.

Beets

Beets are found on most liver detox diets. Some people do shots of beet juice. What’s the secret power behind beets? Well, beets actually thin your bile, which makes it easy for your body to naturally cleanse itself. When bile is too thick, it can be difficult for your body to push toxic matter out. Buy beets and shred them in your food processor to create beet slaw (add olive oil, salt, or apple cider vinegar to improve the taste).

Non-Inflammatory Proteins

The body uses amino acids to support liver detox and other bodily functions. Unfortunately, when we only eat “muscle” meats, we don’t get the full range of amino acids we need. That means our liver is starving. Create a healthier amino acid balance by eating non-inflammatory proteins. Eggs, fish, dairy products, and shellfish are some easy options. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, eat some organ meats.

Drink Water and Tea

Many liver detox diets also recommend drinking high levels of water and tea. Water is particularly beneficial for your kidneys, where it helps prevent kidney stones. But since the liver and kidneys are two parts of the detox system, what’s good for your kidneys is good for your liver as well. Herbal teas are particularly popular for a liver detox.

Lemon Juice

Dr. Oz is a particular supporter of lemon juice. Make your own lemon juice by squeezing the juice from half a lemon into a glass of hot water in the morning. This can kickstart your metabolism and some people even call it a “wake up call for the liver.” Reportedly, the sour lemon flavor triggers hormones and nerves in the liver and digestive system, which encourages your organs to be more active.

Other Herbs and Supplements

You’ll find a wide range of liver detox herbs and supplements available online, including dandelion riot, methionine, zinc, crab apple, turmeric, Brussels sprouts, St. Mary’s Thistle, Diatomaceous Earth, and herbal bitters. Some people also claim that garlic and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli can help cleanse the liver.

One Day Liver Detox Juice Fast

Following the lessons listed above is a good way to give your liver a break for a week or more at a time. Some people, however, are more interested in fast-acting short-term juice fasts.

Here’s an example of one popular one-day liver detox juice fast:

Make a “Miracle” Juice

Miracle liver detox juices typically consist of a juice like cranberry water or unsweetened cranberry juice. Some people will also dilute the cranberry juice with filtered water. Make sure you choose cranberry juice that is free from sugar, corn syrup, and other artificial flavors or processed sugars.

Then, add natural herbs and compounds to your juice to increase its liver cleansing effectiveness. Many people add cinnamon, ground ginger, nutmeg, freshly squeezed orange juice, and freshly squeezed lime juice to their cranberry juice, for example.

Boil your Miracle Juice

Some people will also boost the effectiveness of their miracle juice by boiling the cranberry water beforehand. If you’re doing this, bring the cranberry water/juice to a light boil and then reduce the heat to low. Add cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg to the water using a tea ball. Or, if you want a stronger taste, add the foods directly to the liquid. Then, let the juice simmer for 15 to 20 minutes and cool to room temperature. Finally, stir in the lemon and orange juices.

Alternate Between your Miracle Juice and Filtered Water

Throughout the day of your cleanse, alternate between drinking one cup of filtered water and one cup of your miracle juice. Aim to have 8 glasses of miracle juice and 8 glasses of water by the end of the day (drink one cup every hour).

Consider Adding a Fiber Supplement

As mentioned above, a good liver detox cleanses your kidneys and colon at the same time. That’s why many people will add a fiber supplement to their one day juice cleanse. Consider adding psyllium husks (1 to 2 teaspoons in each 8 ounce glass) to your juice to support healthy digestive movement.

Consider Exercising

If you want to increase fat burning during your cleanse, then engage in light exercise. Don’t push yourself too hard – because remember, your body will be low on calories. Go for a 20 minute walk or spend 10 minutes on the elliptical machine.

The idea behind a short-term juice fast is that you reduce the workload on your body. Then, your body can use its extra energy to heal and regenerate parts of the body. Limiting your caloric intake for an entire day gives your body a valuable break from a lifetime of eating.

Should You Do a Liver Detox?

We live in a world filled with toxins. The air we breathe is polluted and the food we eat has pesticides and processed compounds inside it.

Our body has a natural cleansing system that usually works very well. Unfortunately, that cleansing system can often have trouble keeping up. Some people do a liver detox to treat acne. Others use it to treat hormonal imbalances, bad breathe, gas, bloating, or digestive problems.

If you’ve felt unbalanced and unenergetic lately, then it may not be your fault: it may be your liver’s fault. In that case, a liver detox may help you become healthier.
