What is Amla Extract?

Amla extract is an herbal product taken from a tree that grows naturally in India and the Middle East.

The amla fruit itself is almost perfectly spherical. It’s a light green-yellow color and smooth and hard to the touch. There are six vertical stripes down the sides of the fruit.

The tree on which the fruit grows reaches between 8 to 18 meters in height. The tree grows naturally throughout the Middle East and India and can be distinctively identified by its crooked trunk and spreading branches.

The herbal extract goes by a few different names, including amla extract, amalaki, amla berry, emblica officinalis, and Indian gooseberry.

Amla is used to treat a diverse range of conditions and problems. For years, Ayurvedic doctors have used it to treat high cholesterol, hardening of the arteries, diabetes, pain and swelling, upset stomach, joint pain, and even cancer.

How Does Amla Extract Work?

Amla extract works by reducing total cholesterol levels – including fatty acids called triglycerides in particular.

By reducing these fatty acids, amla extract makes your cardiovascular system more efficient and less prone to blockages. As a result, you can reduce your risk of heart problems and lower cholesterol naturally.

The secret power behind amla extract lies in its high levels of vitamin C, minerals, polyphenols, tannins, fibers, proteins, and amino acids.

In studies, amla extract has even been shown to reduce total cholesterol levels while leaving HDL cholesterol (“good cholesterol”) levels intact.

Ultimately, these benefits have led some people to call amla extract “one of, if not the most important medicinal plant in Ayurveda.”

In one Japanese study published in the British Journal of Nutrition in 2013, researchers found that amla extract successfully demonstrated its effectiveness as an anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-platelet compound.

These effects were all linked back to the tannins of the amla herb. Those tannins include Phyllaemblicin B, emblicanin A (37%), emblicanin B (33%), punigluconin (12%) and pedunculagin.

Other ingredients in amla extract include apigenin, gallic acid, ellagic acid, chebulinic acid, quercetin, chebulagic acid, corilagin, isostrictiniin, methyl gallate, and luteolin.

How to Buy Amla Extract

Whether you call it amalaki powder, Indian gooseberry, or amla extract, the supplement can be purchased all across the internet. You can buy it at any health food store, for example, or on Amazon.

As with most herbal supplements, the quality of amla extract supplements varies widely. Here are some things to look for when purchasing an amla extract supplement:

— Pure Amla Extract With No Binders Or Fillers
— 100% Natural Amla Extract
— At Least 30% Tannins Content (40% Or More Is Ideal)

One popular amla extract supplement is advertised as a blood sugar management pill. It’s priced at around $10 to $12 for a 60 pill package. Each pill contains 400mg of amla fruit extract, 40% of which is tannins.

That supplement also promises that the 400mg extract is equivalent to eating 5000mg of whole fresh amla fruit.

How to Use Amla Extract

Follow the recommended directions on your amla extract supplement. Typically, the directions state you should take one or two capsules per day.

Amla Extract Benefits

Amla extract has been associated with all sorts of different benefits. It’s been used by Indian doctors for thousands of years – primarily for blood sugar control.

However, in studies, amla extract has demonstrated a few other benefits, including all of the following:

Memory Booster (high levels of vitamin C act as an antioxidant, targeting free radicals in your brain)

Lower Cholesterol

— Better Blood Sugar Control

— Delay Diabetes

— Protect Cells Against Radiation Damage

— Promote Collagen Synthesis and Healthier Skin

Who Should Use Amla Extract?

Amla goes by a few different names. In Hindi, it’s called amla. In Sanskrit, the language of ancient India, it’s called amalaki. Today, you can find the supplement sold under names like amla extract as well, amalaki powder, and Indian gooseberry.

No matter what you call it, amla extract has been linked to many powerful health benefits. It’s proven to be rich with vitamin C and demonstrates powerful abilities as an anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant.

For all of these reasons, amla extract is a powerful and affordable supplement that promises to help anyone improve their health.

  1. I have just tested the product Amalaki in my lab. The test produced the worst results of any product I have tested. The product didn't alter my readings on any organ or system in my body so am puzzled how people get the results they claim perhaps its simply the belief in the product.
